Rivera, Delgado Power Wingnuts Past Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 15-4 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.

Carlos Rivera and Jorge Delgado each tied a Wingnuts' single-game record with five base hits. Rivera also tied a league record and set a Wingnuts' record with five runs scored.

Wichita scored seven runs in the top of the first inning against Goldeyes' starter Chris Salamida. Mike Conroy and Josh Horn opened the game with groundball singles. Juan Richardson drove in Conroy with a line drive single to center. Rivera singled to right to load the bases, setting up Delgado's two-run line drive single to left that made it 3-0. Salamdia struck out Josh Workman, but then walked Peter Barrows to re-load the bases. Edwin Bellorin followed with a line drive single to right that scored Rivera and Delgado to give Wichita a five-run lead. Salamida was relieved by Mike Williams who allowed an RBI single to center from Jose Duran that made it 6-0. Conroy drove in the final run of the inning with a groundout to shortstop.

After Derek Blacksher escaped three first inning walks to keep the seven-run lead intact, an RBI single from Bellorin and sacrifice fly from Duran made it 9-0 Wichita heading into the bottom of the second.

Luis Allen drove in Fehlandt Lentini with a line drive single down the left field line, but Blacksher escaped further trouble by inducing a double play of the bat of Kendall Price.

Rivera clubbed a long, solo home run with two outs in the top of the third to make it 10-1.

Bryan Myrow and Wes Long each had an RBI in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 10-3. In hte bottom of the fourth, Winnipeg loaded the bases with no outs, but Blacksher limited them to just one run to keep the Wingnuts in front 10-4.

Wichita put the game away for good with three runs in the top of the fifth. Richardson singled through the left side to score Horn from third base. Rivera followed with a two-run home run to right field.

Delgado doubled home a run in the top of the seventh while the Wingnuts' 15th run came home on an error charged to Long at shortstop.

Blacksher earned the win, battling through five innings. Blacksher allowed four earned runs on nine hits, walked four, and struck out one. It was Blacksher's first road win this season.

Salamida allowed seven earned runs on six hits in the loss, walking one, and striking out one.

Kendy Batista, Logan Hoch, Jared Simon, and Matt Nevarez each chipped in a scoreless inning of relief. Seven of the Wingnuts' starters had at least one hit, while seven scored at least one run.
