Pheasants left stranded in Pensacola

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants fell 3-1 Friday night against the Pensacola Pelicans in the first game of their southern road swing. The Pheasants dropped to 52-24 on the year but hold first place in the second-half division race.

Sioux Falls left eight runners on base and five in scoring position. Pensacola starter Dane DeValk (9-1) carved up the Pheasants lineup, limiting them to one run and three hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four.

The only Pheasants run was Brandon Sing's solo home run in his first at bat against his former team. He played with the Pelicans in 2008. It was Sing's 26th round-tripper of the year, one shy of Jermaine Swinton's franchise record set in 2001.

Pensacola broke a 1-1 tie with Dallas Christison's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Javier Brito homered to in the third inning to tally the third run.

The Pensacola bullpen pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Seth Overbey notched his sixth save. He gave up a one-out double to Hunter Jobes but struck out Gus Milner and Eddy Rodriguez to end the ballgame.

Chris Salberg (9-1) took his first loss of the year. He yielded three runs on six hits over seven innings. He walked two and fanned six. Ryan Grant tossed a perfect inning of relief.
