St. Paul Saints News Release

LINCOLN, NE - If the St. Paul Saints want to be part of the playoff push over the final three weeks of the season they need to start winning, but on Friday night at Haymarket Park they lost for the fifth straight time 11-6.

The Saints, who had scored just four runs in their last four road games, managed to jump out to a 3-0 lead. In the second inning Steve Butler dropped down a bunt single. With one out Brandon Carter singled moving Butler to third. With two outs Jason Cooper walked loading the bases and Ole Sheldon followed with a two-run single making it 2-0.

In the fourth the Saints added to that lead when Flint Wipke homered to left-center, his third with the Saints and seventh of the season, making it 3-0. That would be the last lead of the night for the Saints as the Saltdogs tied it in the bottom of the inning.

Saints starter Jake Schmidt cruised through the first three innings allowing just one hit, but in the fourth with one out he walked Rafael Alvarez and Juan Richardson. Argelis Nunez drilled a three-run homer, his 17th of the season, tying the game at three.

In the fifth the Saltdogs scored five runs with two outs. After Schmidt retired the first two of the inning Jeremy Gillan and Gavin Dickey started the rally with back-to-back singles. Rafael Alvarez followed with a two-run double giving the Saltdogs a 5-3 lead. Juan Richardson made it 6-3 with an RBI single. Nunez came calling again with a two-run homer to left-center, his second of the night and 18th of the season making it 8-3.

The Saints scrapped across two runs to make it 8-5. In the sixth Sheldon walked and Brent Krause followed with a single. With two outs Steve Butler walked on 13 pitches to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Sheldon cutting the deficit to four.

In the seventh Carter walked and Edgard Clemente followed with a grounder to second, but Brandon Jones booted it putting runners at first and second. With one out Sheldon came through with an RBI double cutting the deficit to three, but the Saints couldn't come through with any more hits in the inning.

That seemed to give the momentum to the Saltdogs who scored three in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs Roberto Alvarez cleared the bases with a double making it 11-5.

Sheldon finished the scoring for the Saints with a solo homer in the ninth, his 17th of the season. He finished the night 3-4, falling a triple shy of the cycle, with four RBI and two runs scored.

The same two teams meet Saturday night in the finale of the three game series at Haymarket Park. The Saints send RHP Zach Peterson (6-4, 3.06) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Angel Castro (1-2, 4.20). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
