Big Inning Costs Wingnuts

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-3 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

The Wingnuts committed three errors, leading to six unearned runs in the defeat while leaving 12 runners on base.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Explorers scored five unearned runs to put the game away. Tim Alberts drew a leadoff walk against Wingnuts' starter Sean Teague, but was forced out at second on a sacrifice attempt by Derek Schermerhorn. Javier Brown dribbled a single through the left side of the infield to move Schermerhorn to third. Dustin Pease relieved Teague and induced a comebacker to the mound from Eric Williams. Pease caught Schermerhorn in a rundown between third and home and tossed to third baseman Michael Bell. Bell ran Schermerhorn towards the plate but made a high throw to Jeff Christy that went off his glove and allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Pease struck out Darrick Hale for the second out of the seventh and then issued an intentional walk to T.J. Bohn that loaded the bases. Jacob Wiley relieved Pease and faced Kent Sakamoto who reached on an error at third by Bell that scored Brown and made it 4-2. Wiley hit Ray Serrano with the bases full to force in the X's fifth run. Steve Pearson finished off the inning with a two-run single through the left side that opened a 7-2 Sioux City advantage. The Wingnuts had first and second with no outs in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.

Serrano hit a solo home run leading off the second on a towering flyball to left-center to drive in the first run of the game. The Wingnuts tied it in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single to center from Jorge Delgado. Raul Gonzalez scored the tying run after leading off the inning with a double in his first official Wingnuts' at bat.

Teague made a throwing error trying to pickoff Brown at first base in the bottom of the fifth that sent him to third. Brown scored one batter later when Eric Williams slapped a single to left field to give the X's a 2-1 lead.

The Wingnuts tied the game for a second time in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Christy. Cesar Suarez beat Pearson's throw to the plate from right field. The Wingnuts final run came in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout from Jorge Cortes.

Teague took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, in 6.1 IP, his longest professional outing. Teague struck out five and walked two. Mike Bille earned the win in relief with a scoreless seventh. X's starter Ty Marotz took a no-decision, allowing two runs, one earned in six innings. The Wingnuts had the leadoff hitter on six times. Patterson extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
