Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms completed a crucial weekend sweep of the Madison Capitols with a 4-1 victory Saturday night. It was Youngstown's first weekend sweep since January.
"We needed the four points this weekend, so it was a big sweep for us. We need to carry this momentum forward this weekend and make some ground in the playoff race," said Phantoms forward Cameron Morrison.
Morrison drew first blood for Youngstown, after Matt Miller forced a turnover and set up Morrison for his team leading 27th tally of the year.
The two teams would play the next period and a half without a goal, until Luke McElhenie beat Ryan Bednard to level the score just over halfway through the second frame. It was McElhenie's 12th goal this season.
Just as it seemed like the two sides would head to the third period tied at one, Luke McInnis gave the Phantoms a lead they would never relinquish. McInnis intercepted a Capitols pass near the blue line and fired a wrist shot past Ryan Edquist for his second goal of the weekend.
Lukas Craggs would extend the Phantoms advantage early on in the final frame, with a wrist shot that blew past Edquist for his 10th goal of the campaign. It was also Craggs' second goal of the weekend. Phantoms Captain Matt Alvaro would add an empty net goal late to give Youngstown the 4-1 victory.
"We adjusted some things this week with our forecheck. It was definitely part of the game plan to force some turnovers, and it was nice to see that come to fruition," said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.
Youngstown will hit the road for a three games in three days stretch, beginning Thursday night in Bloomington. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. eastern time.
