BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 16, 2011) - Tom Sestito scored twice in a 1:56 span and Denis Hamel added two goals and an assist as the Adirondack Phantoms defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-1 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Adirondack improves to 3-1-0-0. The Sound Tigers fall to 2-3-0-0 with the loss.
Adirondack took the lead in the first period courtesy of two Sestito goals. His first came at the 15:36 mark of the opening frame. Sestito got the puck from Garrett Roe and skated behind the Sound Tigers net and just below the left faceoff circle, before he spun and fired the puck low past Kevin Poulin to give the Phantoms the 1-0 lead. Sestito struck again less than two minutes when the Sound Tigers were unable to clear their zone. Jason Akeson fed the puck to Sestito who was all alone in front of Poulin and beat the Sound Tigers netminder to give the Phantoms a 2-0 lead after two periods.
The Phantoms added to their lead at the 13:38 mark of the second period courtesy of veteran forward Denis Hamel. Mike Testwuide's initial shot was blocked, but Hamel found the loose puck in the slot and one-timed it past Poulin to give Adirondack the 3-0 advantage. Michael Leighton was sharp in net for the Phantoms and made critical saves during Sound Tigers power plays in the second frame, keeping the score 3-0 after 40 minutes despite the Sound Tigers 19-11 shot advantage to that point.
Jason Akeson increased the Phantoms lead to four with a power-play goal at 11:06 of the third period after Matt Donovan was given a match penalty for a check to the head. David Ullstrom spoiled Leighton's shutout bid with his second goal in as many games at 12:25 of the period, and Hamel added his second goal and third point of the game with a tip-in on the power play at 14:14.
Leighton made 25 saves to earn his third win of the season. Poulin made 18 saves and drops to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Sound Tigers return to action this Friday night when they make their only trip of the season to St. John's, Newfoundland to take on the St. John's IceCaps in a two-game series. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
