Barons Game 4 | Home Game 2 | AHL Game 55
Oct. 16, 2011, 4 pm CDT | Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City
Broadcast: KXY 96.1 FM
TODAY: Fresh off a club-record 10-goal showing in the home opener last night, the Barons return to action at home against the Houston Aeros, top affiliate of the Minnesota Wild. This is the first of 8 meetings between the West Division rivals. Houston won 9 of the 10 matchups last year, including all 5 in OKC. The Barons enter this afternoon's game having won 2 straight and are tied for third in the division, one point back of Houston and two back of Abbotsford. The Aeros dropped a 4-3 shootout decision at home against San Antonio last night.
EERIE SIMILARITIES: After being on the losing end of a 7-0 Texas home opener on Sunday, OKC turned the tables against the Stars last night with a franchise record 10 goals and club high 9-goal margin of victory. In both games of the OKC-Texas season series so far, the losing club has pulled its starting goaltender after falling behind 4-0 in the second period. Both games featured a pair of goals in rapid succession, as Teemu Hartikainen and Chris VandeVelde scored 10 seconds apart last night, also a club record. Texas' Matt Fraser and Jordie Benn lit the lamp 15 seconds apart on Oct. 9. Both games featured 3-goal first periods.
FOR THE BOOKS: OKC's 10 goals last night are the most in a game by an AHL club so far this season and the most in the league since Charlotte scored 10 on Dec. 6, 2010 against Syracuse. The Barons' 18 assists and 28 total points last night are 2011-12 league highs, as is their 6-goal second period. Ryan Keller's 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) tied for the second-most in the AHL so far this season. Antti Tyrvainen and Triston Grant were both plus-4 last night, matching the league high so far. The previous Barons mark for most goals in a game was 8, Oct. 17, 2010 at Houston in an 8-2 win. Their previous best margin of victory was 7 goals in a 7-0 blanking of Rockford on April 1.
CLUB RECORD RECAP: Here are the 10 club records from last night:
Goals in a game: 10
Points: 28
Assists: 18
Goals in a period: 6
Margin of victory: 9
Fastest 2 goals: 0:10
Fastest 3 goals: 0:44
Most consecutive goals: 9
Best individual +/-: Tyrvainen and Grant, +4 (joining O'Marra from Nov. 7, 2010)
Best team +/-: +30
MULTIPLE MULTIPLES: After just one Baron, Mark Arcobello, had turned in a multi-point game through the first 2 contests, last night 10 of 18 OKC skaters had at least 2 points.
SAVE THE PUCK: Rookies Hunter Tremblay and Tyler Pitlick each recorded their first professional goals last night. Pitlick registered his first assist on Friday at San Antonio.
BACK INTO THE FRAY: The Barons signed defenseman Kevin Montogmery to an AHL contract yesterday and the 23-year-old native of Rochester, NY, chipped in 2 assists. Montgomery finished last season with the Barons after being acquired in a Feb.,. 28 trade from Colorado for Shawn Belle.
MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME: Today's game is the second of a season-high 5-game homestand. The Barons next road game is Oct. 29 at Houston. OKC has 9 games in October, all in Oklahoma or Texas.
ARCOBELLO ON BARONS WEEKLY: Mark Arcobello will be this week's guest along with head coach Todd Nelson on "Barons Weekly," Monday from 6-7 pm at Buffalo Wild Wings on the Northwest Expressway in Oklahoma City. The program airs on AM 1340 The Game.
