Three-In-Three Ends with Shutout Loss

Less than 24 hours after posting three goals in a loss in Toronto, the offensive troubles resumed for the Lake Erie Monsters on Sunday, as they were shut out by the Marlies 4-0 to finish a three-in-three weekend. The Monsters fall to 0-5 to start the 2011-12 season.

After starting the first four games for Lake Erie, goaltender Trevor Cann had the night off, replaced by rookie James Reid, who was playing his first professional game.

Toronto shot out of the gates, scoring three of their four goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Joey Crabb scored just 4:39 into the game, assisted by Jerry D'Amigo and Mike Zigomanis.

Less than a minute later, Jeff Finger doubled Toronto's early lead, scoring at 5:25 off assists from Zigomanis and Marcel Muller.

D'Amigo sent the Marlies to the locker room with a 3-0 lead with his goal at 19:17 of the first. Crabb and Matt Lashoff were credited with the helpers.

Toronto outshot Lake Erie 11-8 in the opening frame.

Crabb notched his second of the game at the 8:24 mark of the second in what would prove to be the last goal of the day for either team. Joe Colborne and D'Amigo assisted.

The Monsters would hold the Marlies scoreless the rest of the way, but were not able to find the back of the net themselves. Toronto bested Lake Erie in shots in the second period, 12-9, while both teams put up four shots apiece in the third.

Lake Erie kept Toronto scoreless on the power play, holding the Marlies to 0-4 on the man advantage. The Monsters were 0-2 on the power play for the game and are now 0-19 so far this season.

Reid finished with 23 saves on 27 shots faced in his first game. Toronto netminder Jussi Rynnas stopped all 21 Monsters shots he saw.

The Monsters will continue their five-game road trip next weekend with another three-in-three, playing Friday and Saturday in Syracuse and going back to Toronto on Sunday. The team will return home to host Syracuse on Wednesday, October 26th.
