Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen came back to tie the game in the third period for the second straight game only to fall to the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena. Brett Sterling scored Peoria's only goal and Ben Bishop turned in a 34-save performance in the losing effort.
Peoria fell to 0-3-0-1 on the season and will be in search of their first win of the year on Friday in San Antonio.
Riley Nash's wrist shot produced the game's only goal through the first two periods as he beat Bishop at 4:29 of the second frame while on the power play. More penalties put the pressure on the Rivermen near the end of the second period when Jay Barriball, Brennan Evans and Brett Sonne were all called for minors within 1:58 of each other. The Rivermen were able to navigate the tough stretch and tie the game shortly thereafter.
The game-tying goal came from Sterling just 2:28 into the third as he sped out of his own zone to create a two-on-one opportunity. Sterling's initial shot glanced off the glove of Mike Murphy and dropped into the crease where Sterling finished his second of the season. Danny Syvret and TJ Hensick were credited with assists.
Charlotte's eventual game winner was scored at 9:27 of the third from Jon Matsumoto. He fired a slapshot over the glove of Bishop for his third of the season and league-leading ninth point in four games. Drayson Bowman tapped in a five-on-three power-play goal at 12:32 to finish off the scoring for the Checkers.
Charlotte finished 2-for-8 on the man advantage while Peoria was unsuccessful on all four of their attempts. Murphy made 31 saves on 32 Rivermen shots and was awarded the first star of the game for Charlotte.
The Rivermen road trip continues on Friday in San Antonio at 7 p.m. and will shift to Cedar Park, Tex. on Sunday. Both games can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
