Providence, RI - Zach Hamill beat Portland goaltender Justin Pogge in the fifth round of a shootout and Anton Khudobin denied Mathieu Beaudoin's final attempt as the Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates by a margin of 3-2 in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 4,368 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

Andrew Bodnarchuk matched his goal output from the 2010-11 season with his first tally of the season and Tyler Randell scored his first professional goal during the first period to lead Providence to their second straight victory, upping their record to 2-3-0-0 on the season.

Matt Watkins and Ryan Duncan found the back of the net for Portland and Pogge stopped 25 shots as the Pirates dropped both games of their weekend set, dropping to 1-1-0-1.

Bodnarchuk got the hosts on the board first, capitalizing on a rebound off a shot from the point by Craig Cunningham five minutes into the game. The Pirates would have an answer six minutes later when Watkins deflected a Michael Stone shot past Providence goaltender Anton Khudobin, which turned out to be the lone Portland shot of the period. With 6:35 remaining in the first, Randell struck to send Providence into the intermission with a 2-1 lead and 12-1 shot advantage. A power-play goal by Duncan in the second, his first career AHL tally, would be the only offensive production in the final 40 minutes of the game for either team as they headed into the extra overtime period and shootout tied at two. Following a successful attempt in the second round by Providence's Jamie Arniel, Duncan kept the visitors alive in the fourth round however it would not be enough as Hamill and Khudobin sealed the victory in the fifth frame with a successful attempt and save.

Providence out-shot the Pirates by a 28-23 margin as Khudobin raised his record to 2-3-0 and Pogge fell to 0-1-0 in his Portland debut.

The Pirates will open up a three-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday, October 19 against the Manchester Monarchs at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will feature a special "Chamber Night" as the Pirates will be recognizing those who are involved with the Portland Regional Chamber in their First Annual Membership Appreciation Night. The homestand will continue on Friday when the Adirondack Phantoms come to town for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Fans are encouraged to join the Pirates as they host Cystic Fibrosis Night to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as the first of nine Friday "Dollar Desert Dogs" nights where hot dogs can be purchased for a single dollar at any of the Civic Center concession locations on the concourse from an hour before faceoff until 10 minutes after the second period begins. The fourth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game, sponsored by Maine Medical Center, will follow on Saturday, October 22 against Providence.
