Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Philadelphia Phantoms overcame three early one-goal deficits before eventually pulling away for a 7-4 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before 6,738 fans at Philadelphia's Wachovia Spectrum on Sunday.
The Phantoms got goals from six different players to improve to 27-32-2-6 and pull to within seven points of the Albany River Rats for the East Division's fourth and final playoff spot. The Sound Tigers slipped to 31-29-1-5 and remain a point behind the River Rats who lost to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday.
Bridgeport scored three times on just eight combined shots in the first and second periods but mustered only one goal on 15 third-period shots on Philly netminder Scott Munroe. The Phantoms took their first lead of the game, 4-3, on Newtown, Conn. native Pete Zingoni's 16th goal of the season 10:19 into the second period and never looked back.
After the Phantoms went ahead 5-3 on Matt Ellison's 11th tally during a four-goal second period outburst, the Sound Tigers got back to within a goal at 5-4 early in the third. Masi Marjamaki stuffed home a rebound of Jamie Fraser's shot during a power play just 1:29 into the final period. The Phantoms, however, got their two-goal lead back a little more than a minute later when Boyd Kane scored his second of the night and ninth of the season at 2:32 to make it 6-4. Jared Ross netted his ninth of the year as well to cap the scoring at the 12:23 mark.
The first half of the game was a see-saw battle. Frans Nielsen scored his 18th goal 12:41 into the first period for a 1-0 Sound Tiger lead. After Kane pulled the Phantoms even at 13:38, Jamie Johnson scored his fourth goal for a 2-1 Sound Tiger lead at 18:08. The Phantoms drew even again when Jonathan Matsumoto scored his first of the year 5:24 into the second. It took the Sound Tigers only 24 seconds go ahead once again as Gregg Johnson scored his fifth goal for a 3-2 edge at the 5:48 mark. Philadelphia made it 3-3 on Don Morrison's fourth goal at the 8:45 mark.
Lance Galbraith earned his first point as a Sound Tiger when he assisted Gregg Johnson's goal. Philly's Mark Cullen led all point-getters with three - all on assists.
The Sound Tigers were 2-for-3 on the power play and held the Phantoms scoreless on five man advantages. Philly outshot Bridgeport 34-23. Munroe had 19 saves and Bridgeport goaltender Billy Thompson finished with 27 saves.
