Amerks best Aeros 3-1

Houston Aeros News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Janis Sprukts and Drew Larman scored a goal apiece and Adam Dennis made 24 saves, as the Rochester Americans defeated the Houston Aeros 3-1 at Blue Cross Arena at War Memorial. Kamil Kreps also scored for Rochester (39-26-1-0), which won for just the third time in 13 games

Joey Tetarenko scored his first goal of the season and Dieter Kochan stopped 31 shots for Houston (22-35-3-6), which is 0-12-2-1 in its last 15 road games, including nine straight regulation losses. The Aeros finish off a five-game road trip Tuesday and Wednesday in Manitoba.

The Aeros gave up a goal 35 seconds into the game Saturday in Syracuse, and nearly did the same thing in this contest. Joel Ward turned the puck over deep in the Houston zone and Andrej Sekera, who had a point-blank shot, but Kochan got a piece of the puck with his shoulder.

But Sprukts made it 1-0 Rochester just 1:42 into the game. Dylan Hunter stole the puck at the blueline and fed a 2-on-1 pass for Sprukts, who blasted a high shot by Kochan for his 17th goal of the season.

Ward banged a power play shot off the outside of the net eight minutes into the game.

Dennis denied Roman Voloshenko with 6:56 left in the first. He first kicked out Shawn Belle's shot from the left point, and Voloshenko came streaking in from the left corner. Alone in front, Dennis made a pad save on Voloshenko and then covered up. The sequence provided the Aeros with just their second and third shots of the game.

Tetarenko evened things up with his second goal in 84 games with the Aeros, with 1:11 left in the opening period. Benoit Pouliot beat Rochester to the puck at the blueline, along the boards, and fed a cutting Tetarenko down the middle. Tetarenko, alone in front, beat Dennis low for his first goal of the season.

The Aeros haven't led after one in any of their past 11 games, having allowed the game's first goal nine times. Houston has been outscored 11-4 in the first period of its last nine games, and has yielded nine first-period goals in its last five outings.

Larman's 14th of the goal gave Rochester the lead back with 8:10 left in the second period. Larman pushed the puck around two Aeros, and broke in 2-on-1 with Dylan Hunter. Larman never passed the puck, instead getting the puck short side by Kochan.

The Aeros had a great chance on the power play in the final minute of the second, but Dennis made a pad save on Belle's left circle blast. Dennis also covered up the rebound.

Early in the third, Houston's Peter Olvecky took a pass from Matt Foy alone in front, but his shot went off defenseman Martin Lojek's skate.

Foy got the puck in the net with 6:40 left as an Aeros power play expired, but he pushed it over the line with his glove.

Ward went around Amerks captain Brandon Smith with a burst of energy up the left wing with 3:13 remaining, but Dennis made a pad save.

The Aeros got Kochan out of the net with 43 seconds remaining, but Dennis snared defenseman Mike Madill's drive from the right point with 18 ticks left.

Rochester was credited with its third goal with two seconds left, when Danny Irmen interfered with Kreps on a breakaway with an open net.

The Aeros have not held a scoring advantage in the third period in 16 of their last 19 games.

Houston finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Rochester went 0-for-3. The Aeros didn't allow a power play goal for the first time in 11 games.
