Iowa Chops News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Iowa Stars concluded their six-game, 12-day, 4,300 mile road trip with an afternoon game against the San Antonio Rampage on Sunday afternoon. Behind the strength of three-straight goals by Marius Holtet, the Stars defeated the Rampage 5-4 for the team's 23rd road win of the season. Iowa is one point behind Peoria for the fourth playoff spot in the West Division going into their head-to-head match-up on Tuesday.
The Iowa Stars staked themselves to a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Recently signed rookie centerman Paul Szczechura capitalized on a turnover in the Rampage zone and fired a shot from the slot that beat Rampage netminder David LeNeveu at the 15:43 mark for his first professional goal. Iowa out-shot San Antonio 10 to five in the period.
Forward Konstantin Pushkarev capitalized on a Marty Wilford shot for a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. Wilford fired the puck from the blueline, Janos Vas sent the rebound shot back on goal and Pushkarev was able to tuck home the third attempt for the two-goal lead at 12:58. Alex Leavitt pulled San Antonio to within one just under a minute later. The Stars offense out-shot the Rampage 20 to eight.
Rampage Center Joel Perrault evened the score at two 1:16 into the third period. Don MacLean fired a one-time shot to give San Antonio a 3-2 lead five minutes into the period. Two minutes later, MacLean redirected a pass from behind the Iowa goal for his second of the game and 4-2 lead. Then Iowa's 'Nasty Norwegian' Marius Holtet went to work for the Stars. The Hamar, Norway native scored his first of the night when he potted a rebound off a Mario Scalzo shot to make the score 4-3 at the 10:26 mark. With three minutes left in final period, Holtet evened the score at four goals apiece. Defenseman Mark Ardelan sprung Holtet right up the middle of the ice. Holtet was taken down from behind, but was able to get a shot off. The Rampage defenders were unable to control the rebound and it ricocheted into the San Antonio goal. One minute and eight seconds later, Holtet scored his hat-tossing goal to give Iowa the 5-4 lead and the eventual win.
Sunday's hat-trick was Iowa's second of the season and just the third regular season hat-trick in Iowa's two-year history.
Iowa Stars Goaltender Dan Ellis faced 20 shots en route to his 23rd win of the season.
