Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA - Today, the Norfolk Admirals became the first team in the American Hockey League to clinch a spot in the 2007 Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Admirals clinched after the Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Philadelphia Phantoms this evening in Philadelphia. With the Sound Tigers' loss, the Admirals are guaranteed to finish no worse than fourth in the East Division. The top four teams from each division in the American Hockey League make the playoffs.

Norfolk (45-18-5-1) now has a two-point lead on the Hershey Bears (41-14-6-6) and a six-point lead on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (42-18-2-4) for first place in the East Division. Both the Bears and Penguins claimed victories this evening while the Admirals did not have a game. Norfolk, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton have the three highest point totals in the 27-team American Hockey League with 96, 94 and 90 points, respectively.

Norfolk departs on a quick two-game road trip that will take them to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Binghamton next weekend. Norfolk faces the Penguins at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and the Senators at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
