Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins shutout the Manchester Monarchs 5-0 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Nate Thompson, Nathan Dempsey, Pascal Pelletier, Marco Rosa and David Krejci. Hannu Toivonen earned his tenth shutout in a P-Bruins uniform, making 25 saves. Providence remains in third place in the Atlantic Division with 80 points and a 38-25-1-3 record, one point behind the second place Hartford Wolf Pack.
The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after tallying at the 11:07 mark of the opening frame. Dennis Packard pulled the puck off the boards and left it in front of the net for Thompson, where he slapped it past Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera and into the net. Krejci recorded the second assist.
The P-Bruins extended their lead with two goals late in the second period. The first one came at the 18:30 mark, while on the power play. Nate DiCasmirro sent the puck around the boards to Sean Bentivoglio. He then passed it to Dempsey, who was parked right outside the Monarchs crease. From there, he poked the puck into the Monarchs net, giving the P-Bruins a 2-0 advantage. Providence went into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead, scoring 52 seconds later. Petr Kalus caused a turnover in the Monarchs end and Krejci grabbed the loose puck. He sent the puck through the legs of a Monarchs defenseman to Pelletier, waiting back door. He batted the puck into an unguarded net.
In the third period, the P-Bruins padded their lead with two more goals. Only 1:34 into the period, Dwayne Zinger held the puck at the left point and sent it down the boards for T.J. Trevelyan. He took a shot sending the puck towards the net, where it was sent in by Rosa. Providence capped off the scoring at the 4:24 mark with Krejci's team-leading 25th goal of the season. DiCasmirro and Kalus picked up the assists.
LaBarbera made 17 saves, while Barry Brust stopped seven shots, both for the Monarchs. Providence was 1 for 5 on the power play, while Manchester went 0 for 7 on the man-advantage.
