Petes Fall Late to London Knights

March 2, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Peterborough Petes News Release

The London Knights were in town for the only time in the season this Thursday as the Petes celebrated the swearing in of 39 new Canadian citizens before the game got underway. The new Canadians celebrated for nearly the full game, as the Petes lead the Knights until the final three minutes before falling 4-3 to the Western Conference rivals.

Captain Logan Denoble and Adam Timleck both made their returns to PMC ice after several absences due to injuries, while Matthew Timms and Zach Gallant were among the wounded for the tilt against the Knights, which was also the official Boots & Hearts game night.

Following the traditional ceremony, which was officiated by Chief Murray Rodd and included a presentation from MP Maryam Monsef, the opening period got underway with the first action of the evening being a faceoff between Peterborough's Christopher Paquette and former Pete Tyler Rollo of the Knights, which Rollo would win before receiving an ovation for playing his last OHL game at the PMC.

After the tribute the first penalty would be a high stick which would fall on Pavel Gogolev giving London a 5 on 4 advantage with 11 minutes to go in the opener.

As the Gogolev penalty ended and the teams returned to even strength the Petes would go on their first powerplay as London got called for too many men on the ice and sent Richard Whittaker to the box for a minute. the removal of a Knight would give the Liftlock Lads an opening on Joseph Raaymakers which Bobby Dow exploited with the help of Brady Hinz and the returning Declan Chisholm to take the lead by one.

Moments after the Dow goal the Petes would grab yet another powerplay as Liam Foudy took a slashing call. although same as the last it would die out without any standout moments.

After the usual back and forth with both goaltenders holding steady, Austin Osmanski would fall and skate off to the Petes bench in visible discomfort as the period came to an end on the lone Peterborough goal with the Petes holding the shot clock as well at 12-10. Osmanski returned to the game in the second period.

The second period saw the Knights mark their first tally on the night with a goal from Foudy, which was assisted by Nathan Dunkley and Alec Regula to tie the score 1-1.

London would take their third trip to the sin bin following a gasp-worthy moment of back and forth which saw Raaymakers momentarily out of his crease as Andrew Perrott took the second slashing call for the visiting team.

London's loss gave the Petes a slight boost of momentum and even though Perrott soon returned to the ice it wouldn't stop the captain, Logan DeNoble, from getting the puck from Paquette and Gleb Babintsev and depositing it behind the London netminder to raise the Electric City lead by a single goal as the clock hit single digits.

Both teams took penalties at the 6 minute mark for roughing, losing Matt Macnamara for Peterborough and Dunkley for London which put the game into a 4 on 4 situation for the following 2 minutes.

At the 3 minute mark Gogolev took his second trip to the box of the night for cross checking and while he was there was joined by teammate Semyon Der-Arguchintsev who was serving the 2 minute piece of Cole Frasers roughing penalty while Fraser went to the dressing room for a 10-minute game misconduct.

The teams ended the period 4-on-4 as Nathan Dunkley took a high sticking call for the Knights. 40 minutes died out on an eventful 2-1 Petes lead as they held the shots 25-23.

The Electric City Kids began the third frame with the dying moments of a 5-4 powerplay thanks to Dunkley, but could not capitalize on their lead as even strength was given back to London. The back and forth nature which had punctuated the last 40 minutes continued as both teams crossed the ice in quick bursts.

The third 4-on-4 of the evening reared its head as Chad Denault of Peterborough and Harrison Cottam of London were sent to their respective boxes on roughing calls, which Cottam was serving for Richard Whittaker.

As the two penalty takers returned London capitalized on the momentary Peterborough disadvantage as Cottam took the ice while Denault shifted and allowed Cole Tymkin to send the puck to Sergey Popov to tie the game 2-2 in favour of the Knights.

The Peterborough boys would take back their lead with 8:30 on the clock as the captain scored his second of the night delivered by Matt Timleck and Osmanski to mark it 3-2. The assist was Timleck's first point since he scored a goal in his last game before getting injured on December 30.

As the celebration died down from DeNobles goal the Knights fired back and overtook Dylan Wells with a Dunkley goal assisted by Foudy and Billy Moskal to re-tie the match at 3 a piece.

With 3 minutes left in the final frame the Knights would take the lead for the first time on the Thursday night as World Junior Gold winner with Team Canada Alex Formenton would give his team the boost to a 4-3 lead

In the end the Knights would take their single appearance at the PMC 4-3, although the Petes held onto the shots on goal 44-29.
