OHL Kingston Frontenacs

London Capitalizes on Off-Night for Frontenacs

March 2, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

As the Kingston Frontenacs entered the final month of the OHL regular season, they welcomed the London Knights into the Rogers K-Rock Centre. It was Kingston's final game against a Western Conference team this season. Although the London Knights aren't the usual powerhouse team people are used to seeing, they are still a tough opponent. Sitting fifth in the Western Conference with 70 points, they continue to fight for home ice advantage in the first round, despite moving a bunch of their top players at the trade deadline. Two of those players were traded to Kingston. Cliff Pu was making his return to the line-up along with Sean Day, Eemeli Rasanen and Mitchell Byrne. The other former Knight, Max Jones, was still sitting out with an injury.

There was a lot happening in the opening minutes of the first period. Kingston was given the first power play opportunity just 1:31 into the game when Cole Tymkin hauled down Gabe Vilardi. Kingston created some chances on the power play, but it was London that scored the games opening goal while shorthanded. Jeremy Helvig attempted to pass the puck out the zone, but Liam Foudy caused a turnover and shot the puck into the empty Kingston net. London had the next two power play opportunities, but Kingston killed both of those off. There wasn't a ton of scoring chances in a very defensive opening period, and London went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.

Kingston struggled to get anything going into the second period. They had one more power play chance in the period but weren't able to beat Jordan Kooy. London extended their lead when Billy Moskal found a loose puck after a Jeremy Helvig save and put it into the Kingston goal. The Knights controlled the last ten minutes of the second period only allowing two Kingston shots. Kingston went into the intermission searching for a spark. They trailed 2-0.

The spark never came for the Frontenacs. The only goal of the period was a beautiful rush by Liam Foudy that split the defenders and beat Helvig for a 3-0 lead. Kingston applied some pressure with Helvig out for the extra attacker, but Jordan Kooy wouldn't be beat on this night. He, and the rest of the Knights, held on for the 3-0 shutout victory.

Kingston had entered play with a 12-game point streak on home ice but saw that come to an end with the loss. While it was nice to see Day, Pu, Rasanen and Byrne back in the line-up, the team was clearly lacking some chemistry after all the time they had missed.

Kingston will head out on the road for the rest of the weekend making stops in Barrie and North Bay on Saturday and Sunday. They will make a stop in Oshawa on Wednesday night before returning home to face the Ottawa 67's next Friday night at 7 PM.
