Pesonen Sets Team Mark, Satan Makes Penguins Debut In Win
March 16, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
Janne Pesonen set a new team record for points in a season, picking up two assists as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 7-2 win against the Albany River Rats on Monday night.
The win upped the Pens' record to 42-22-2-2 on the season, and they now trail the second place Bridgeport Sound Tigers by just two points in the East Division standing.
Pesonen picked up assists on Miroslav Satan's second period goal and Nick Johnson's third period tally, giving him 68 points on the year. That beat out Toby Petersen's previous single-season best for points in a season, set during the 2000-01 campaign.
The game was Satan's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton debut, and his first game in the American Hockey League since suiting up in a 4-3 win for the Cape Breton Oilers in Saint John on April 1, 1995. The veteran of more than 1,000 National Hockey League games didn't disappoint, recording four points (1+3) on the night.
Luca Caputi and Andy Wozniewski gave the Penguins and early 2-0 lead, scoring goals 1:30 apart before seven minutes were gone in the game. Mike Angelidis cut the lead to one goal with his 15th of the year, before Jeff Taffe regained the two-goal cushion before the first period was out.
Satan struck 3:56 into the second period with Pesonen and Goligoski setting up the power play goal. Jerome Samson made the score 4-2 with his 20th of the season at 7:36 for the final tally of the second period.
The Penguins blew the game open in the third period, with Connor James and Johnson grabbing power play goals, before Wozniewski found the net for the second time on the night with 1:20 to play.
John Curry made 29 saves for his 27th win of the season.
