Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - Andy Wozniewski scored twice as the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins defeated the Albany River Rats 7-2 Monday night at the Times Union Center.

The Penguins scored the game's first goal 5:26 into the contest on an odd-man rush that saw puck-carrier Luca Caputi fake a pass across the goal mouth before sending a sharp angle shot around River Rats goalie Justin Peters on the short side. Just 59 seconds later defenseman Andy Wozniewski doubled his team's lead by poking home the puck during a goal mouth flurry. River Rats assistant captain Mike Angelidis gave his team some life with a goal at 16:56, deflecting a Ryan McGinnis slap shot through Penguins goalie John Curry for his 15th goal of the year. However, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton wasn't finished in the frame, as Jeff Taffe made it 3-1 at 17:47.

Early in the second period the River Rats wound up in penalty trouble and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton made them pay. NHL veteran Miroslav Satan collected a rebound, paused and sent a shot off the inside the far post and in for his first AHL goal in over 15 years. The River Rats answered at 7:36, also on the power play, when forward Jerome Samson beat Curry for his 20th of the year; Yannick Tifu and Mark Flood assisted on the play as Samson extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. After being out-shot 11-4 in the first period, Albany turned it around to out-shoot the Penguins 17-11 in the second, but remained behind 4-2 heading into the second intermission.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored another power play goal off a rebound at 6:34 of the third period. Peters made an impressive play to stuff a back-door one-time shot, only to have Conner James backhand the rebound into the goal to make it 5-2. Midway through the frame the Penguins connected on their third power play goal of the night, this one off of the stick of Nick Johnson from Satan and Janne Pesonen. Goaltender Daniel Manzato replaced starter Peters with 9:54 remaining in the game, after the sixth Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goal. The Penguins put the game out of reach with 1:20 to play when Taffe threaded a perfect pass from the top of the right face off circle to the backdoor where Wozniewski tapped it home for his second of the night and a 7-2 lead.

Penguins goalie John Curry stopped 29-of-31 shots faced and earned the win as Wilkes-Barre Scranton improved to 42-22-2-2 on the year. River Rats starter Justin Peters allowed six goals on 30 shots in 49:50 of action and took the loss as Albany fell to 29-31-3-3 on the year; Daniel Manzato stopped 3-of-4 shots faced in his 9:54 of relief work. The Penguins out-shot the River Rats 34-31 in the game and went 3-for-5 on the power play; Albany went 1-for-9 on the man advantage.

Albany will return to action on Friday, March 20th as they travel to Rhode Island for a 7:05 pm face off with the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The River Rats next home game is on Sunday, March 22nd at 5:00 pm against the Philadelphia Phantoms.
