Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
It may be the middle of summer, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes are celebrating Ukrainian Christmas in July tonight in a game overflowing with Ukrainian spirit and promotions.
Presented by Pratts Wholesale Food Service and the Winnipeg Sun, fans can catch Sloohai on the Winnipeg Free Press entertainment stage on the promenade prior to the game and participate in a polka dance contest for a chance to win some great prizes.
The Ukrainian-themed night will continue on the field, as the Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus will sing the anthems prior to the game. Slava Ukrainian Dancers will perform during the game and there will be a perogy eating contest, sponsored by Sevala's Ukrainian Deli.
There are several ways for fans at the game to support the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and their efforts in the Ukraine. The Goldeyes will donate $4 from every On Deck ticket purchased towards medical supplies for the Ukraine. The Dugout Store is also selling Cheer for Ukrainians! T-Shirts tonight, from which $4 will be donated to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. Sevala's Ukrainian Deli has pledged to donate $5 from every Home Run Combo Platter (Four perogies, two cabbage rolls, kielbasa, meatballs, gravy, coleslaw and rye bread) to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
On the concourse, The Shevchenko Foundation will have Ukrainian Christmas and culture displays for fans to explore.
"There's a rich Ukrainian culture in Winnipeg and across Manitoba, which dates back to the 19th century. We're honoured to be able to celebrate their culture and traditions with our fans tonight," Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier said.
Aside from the Ukrainian-themed events, Jennifer Jones' Olympic gold medal-winning curling team will throw out the ceremonial opening pitch prior to tonight's game.
Fans will tickets dated for June 14, 15 or 29 can exchange them for this fun-filled game or any other 2014 Goldeyes regular season home game.
