Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD- Four games worth of frustration were taken out on the Sioux Falls Canaries Tuesday night as the Gary South Shore RailCats ended their four game losing streak with authority in a 13-5 win over the Canaries. The RailCats gave Dustin Crenshaw plenty of run support as the right hander won his team leading fifth game of the year.

That run support started early as the RailCats picked up four runs in the top of the first. Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez both singled off of Ben Moore to start the game. Ryan Babineau then put down a sac bunt to move the runners up a step. Then with Zac Mitchell at the plate Pulfer broke for third and Mitchell executed a perfect hit and run to the left side with Pulfer racing around third to score and it was 1-0. Craig Maddox then followed with a three run blast to right field his third homerun of the season and it was a 4-0 lead for the RailCats.

On a night that the winds were gusting out of Sioux Falls Stadium the Canaries came back with two outs in the home half of the first. The Canaries got back to back solo homeruns by AJ Kirby-Jones and Chris Duffy to cut the lead to 4-2. It was the first time this season the RailCats had given up back to back homeruns in a game. The Canaries again got a solo shot off of Crenshaw from Steve Tinoco leading off the bottom of the third and the Cats lead was cut to 4-3.

Then despite the wind both teams' starters were able to stop the long ball for the next two innings and the game stayed 4-3 until the sixth. The South Shore then picked up two more runs with Ryan Babineau leading off the inning with a single. He was followed by Craig Maddox who hit a double to left to make it 5-3. Wally Backman moved Maddox to third with a ground ball to second setting up Josh Romanski for an RBI opportunity. Romanski delivered with a sac fly to score Maddox and it was 6-3 RailCats.

The RailCats then erased any doubt that this would be their night and end the four game losing streak with a seven run six hit top of the eighth. Ben Moore got the first out of the inning but then Craig Maddox doubled. On cue Wally Backman came up with an RBI double and the RailCats had a 7-3 lead. Josh Romanski reached on an error by Canaries first baseman A.J. Kirby-Jones bringing home Backman and it was 8-3. Ryan Brockett was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Then in machine like order Drew Muren, Danny Pulfer, Drew Martinez and Zac Mitchell all singled and all drove in a run. The last three hits came off of reliever Kyle Winter and the RailCats blew the game wide open at 12-3. Then with two outs Craig Maddox picked up his fifth RBI to make it 13-3 and the first RailCat in 2014 to have five plus RBI in a game.

Dustin Crenshaw (5-3) went eight scattering eight hits and allowing three earned runs to post the quality start win. Coleman Stephens worked the ninth where the Canaries picked up a pair of late runs to make the final 13-5. Ben Moore (4-2) dropped the game for Sioux Falls who the RailCats have now beaten nine times this season.

Game three is Wednesday night with the first pitch at 7:05pm. RHP Stephen Hiscock (3-4)(4.48) goes for the RailCats while Sioux Falls will send out LHP Matt Wickswat (2-1)(3.22). The broadcast begins at 6:45 on WEFM and on RailCatsBaseball.com.
