Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Chiefs came from behind in the ninth inning to walk it off on Dayton 5-4 Sunday at Dozer Park. The win for Peoria closes out a 12-game homestand where the Chiefs went 9-3, including a series split with Dayton.
With a steady downpour in play, the Chiefs trailed 4-3 as the game went to the ninth. Osvaldo Tovalin led off with a single against Brooks Crawford. Aaron McKeithan was then hit by a pitch in the helmet. Crawford then walked Thomas Francisco to load the bases with nobody out. Pinch-hitter Jimmy Crooks worked a second consecutive walk to allow the tying run to score. Then, with the bases still loaded, Ramon Mendoza was hit by a pitch to end the game.
Tovalin had three of the Chiefs five hits going 3-for-4, his second three-hit game of the series and third of the homestand.
The teams exchanged two runs in their halves of the fourth. In the top half, Austin Hendrick led off with a solo home run off starter Ian Bedell to make it 1-0. After an Austin Callahan double, Jack Rogers grounded back to Bedell, who threw to third to try and put away Callahan, but the throw went down the line which brought Callahan home to make it 2-0.
Bedell exited after 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three.
The Chiefs answered with two runs in their half of the fourth off starter Jose Acuna to tie the game. After a Tovalin double, McKeithan connected on a two-run home run to knot the score at two.
Those were the only runs charged to Acuna, who went five innings giving up just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Dayton re-took the lead in the sixth against Bryan Pope. Ruben Ibarra walked with two outs and got to third on a Callahan single. Ibarra scored on a passed ball with Rogers at the plate, making it 3-2.
Callahan went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Tovalin tied the game at three in the home half of the sixth, slashing a double down the left field line, scoring Victor Scott who was hit by a pitch to lead it off.
Dayton took a 4-3 lead in the eighth on an Edwin Arroyo inside-the-park home run to right field off Alfredo Ruiz. The home run was Arroyo's third of the series. After a Rogers single, Matt Hickey entered and logged 1.2 innings, striking out four.
Hickey got the win, his first of the year while Crawford took the loss, his first of the season.
Peoria improves to 18-15 while Dayton drops to 15-18. Following an off day on Monday, the Chiefs will head to Cedar Rapids to kick off a six-game set on Tuesday.
