Pens' Matt Murley Top Scorer for PlanetUSA Squad at 2004 AHL All-Star Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Matt Murley made his first All-Star appearance a memorable one as he recorded two goals and one assist for the Planet USA All-Star team tonight at the 2004 Pepsi AHL All-Star Classic at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Murley, 24, led PlanetUSA in scoring with three points and had two shots and a plus-two rating in the 9-5 loss to the Canadian All-Star team. He was one of only two players to score two goals and was one of four players to record three points in the game.

The 6'1", 204-pound native of Troy, New York scored his first goal of the game on his first shot at 10:09 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1. In the second period, he assisted on Jeff Hamilton's goal and in the third period, knocked home a rebound past goaltender Ray Emery at 9:45 for his second goal of the game.

Murley was the lone Penguin selected to play in the All-Star Game.

In his second pro season, Murley has recorded 26 points (7+19) and 34 penalty minutes in 39 games with the Penguins. He ranks among the team leaders in assists (first), points (third), plus-minus rating (tied for fourth with a plus-8 rating), power play goals (tied for fourth with three) and shots (fifth with 101).

Murley started the season with the Pittsburgh Penguins and played in three games, going scoreless with four penalty minutes. He was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on October 20.

Murley was recalled by Pittsburgh on December 2 and appeared in seven games, recording one assist (first NHL point) and eight penalty minutes before being reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 17.

Overall, in 10 games with Pittsburgh this season, he has one goal and 12 penalty minutes.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (19-20-5-4, 47 points; Sixth-Place, South Division) continue their six-game homestand on Wednesday when they host the Toronto Roadrunners (20-22-8-2, 50 points; Fifth-Place, North Division) at 7:05 p.m. at Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.

The first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive a Tomas Surovy Bobble Head Doll, courtesy of Northeastern Pennsylvania Highmark BlueShield.

Plenty of good seats are still available for each of the four remaining games on the homestand. Approximately 118 tickets are still available for Wednesday's game; 328 tickets are available Friday's game vs. Portland (7:05 p.m.); 224 tickets are available for Saturday's game vs. Norfolk; and 557 tickets are available for Monday's game vs. Binghamton (5:05 p.m.). All fans attending the Presidents' Day game against the Senators will receive a Matt Murley All-Star Poster, courtesy of McCarthy Tire.

Tickets can be purchased at the Wachovia Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations and telephone outlets. The Penguins have sold out their last 125 home games (league-record) played in Wilkes-Barre.
