Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-2 loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The first period would see the Penguins jump out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Phantoms battle back to tie the score before the intermission. Scott Wilson gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the 1-0 edge at 6:24 as he took a pass from Bryan Rust on the near circle before driving the net and slipping a backhander inside the left post.

Midway through the same period with the Penguins on the power play, Tom Kuhnhackl put his team up by two when he deposited the rebound from Bryan Rust's shot from near faceoff dot.

The second half of the first was all Lehigh Valley with Andrew Gordon getting the Phantoms on the board at 12:30, setting up shop atop of the left faceoff circle and one-timed Jay Rosehill's feed past Penguins goalie Matt Murray.

The Phantoms knotted the score less than three minutes later during a 5-on-4 advantage when Adam Comrie walked into the slot and drilled the puck under the glove of Murray.

Lehigh Valley would go ahead for the first time in the match 5:10 into the second period on Jesper Petterson's first goal of the season. From just inside the Penguins blueline, Nick Cousins sprung his teammate behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defense for a low shot that found the left side of the net.

Zatkoff would enter the game in relief of Murray after that goal and not face a shot for the rest of the period as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot Lehigh Valley, 16-2, in the second.

The first shot the Penguins netminder saw came 20 seconds into the third frame and it would make the score 4-2 for the Phantoms after Jason Akeson picked off a pass on the near wall and hit Taylor Leier in between the harshmarks for a wrister over the glove of Zatkoff.

Cousins netted another power play goal for Lehigh Valley at 3:53 of the third to stretch their lead to three. Akeson completed the scoring with a seeing-eye wrist shot from the high slot with 10:06 left in regulation.

Rob Zepp earned the win for the Phantoms with 27 saves on 29 shots. Murray's record fell to 11-8-2 on the season as he suffered his first loss in five starts.

The Penguins return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 3 as they face off against the Springfield Falcons at 7:05 p.m.
