January 31, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Manchester, NH - David Van der Gulik scored twice on Friday night at Verizon Wireless Arena to help the lead the Manchester Monarchs (27-10-4-2) past the Portland Pirates (24-18-3-0) by a score of 3-1 in the first game since the AHL All-Star Break for both teams. The win gives the Monarchs a nine-point advantage over Portland for first place in the Atlantic Division and a 5-2 edge in the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Tires and Service.

David Van der Gulik opened the scoring early in the first period, putting back a Justin Auger rebound for his eighth goal of at 4:24. Jordan Weal also picked up an assist on the play.

Portland responded slightly more than five minutes later Henrik Samuelsson backhanded the puck to a streaking Alex Bolduc down the right wing. Bolduc beat his defenseman and centered the puck to Darian Dziurzysnki, who one-timed the puck past Jean-Francois Berube at 9:29 of the first. It was Dziurzysnki's ninth goal of the season.

After a scoreless second period, the Monarchs took the lead for good mid-way through the third frame. Kevin Raine, who began his pro career by playing five games with Portland last season, scored the eventual game-winning goal at 9:25 on a low wrist shot to the glove side on Portland net minder Louis Domingue on an odd-man rush. Raine's second goal of the season was assisted by Josh Gratton and Ryan Horvat.

Van der Gulik picked up his second of the night, a shorthanded goal at 12:50, after a stroke of bad luck for the Pirates. Evan Oberg slipped and fell while trying to turn with the puck on the left wing near his own blue line and turned it over to Van der Gulik,, who broke in alone down the right wing and dragged a backhand shot around a sprawling Domingue for his ninth of the season.

Berube (20-4-2) made 26 saves and became the first AHL goalie this season to 20 wins. Domingue (8-4-1) made 22 saves in the defeat.

The Pirates continue seven-game road trip tomorrow when they take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Webster Bank Arena. Game time is 7:00 p.m. You can hear all of the action with the "Voice of the Pirates," Jeff Mannix, on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network beginning with the Pirates Pregame Show at 6:40.
