Penguins reach midpoint atop AHL

Wednesday night's game against the Syracuse Crunch was the 40th of the season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and marked the midway point of the American Hockey League season for the league leaders.

The Penguins continue to set the AHL standard with 31 wins and 66 points halfway through the season, and have allowed a league-low 72 goals in that time frame.

The Pens are slightly ahead of the pace set by the 1992-93 Binghamton Rangers, who set AHL Records for wins (57) and points (124) in a season. The Rangers had a 30-5-5 mark (65 points, .813 winning percentage) at the halfway mark of their record-setting season, while the Penguins are 31-5-3-1 (66 points, .825 winning percentage) at the same point.

PENS TIE TEAM ROAD WINS RECORD

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 3-2 victory Monday afternoon was the club's 16th on the road this season, tying the team record for road victories in a season (previously set in 2000-01 and 2004-05). The 16th victory came in the Penguins' 21st road contest, and the team's record away from the Wachovia Arena stands at 16-3-1-1 (34 points, 74 goals for - 46 goals against) headed into Friday night's game in Binghamton.

McLEAN TIES TEAM MARK FOR POINTS IN A GAME

Kurtis McLean made his Wachovia Arena debut for the Penguins on Wednesday night, and tied the team mark for points in a game in just his third contest with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

McLean assisted on four Pens scores before netting his first goal with the team in the third period, giving him five points (1+4) on the evening. The only other Penguin to ever record five points in a game was John Slaney, who had one goal and four assists against the Hershey Bears on Jan. 21, 2000.

CHRISTENSEN STREAKING

Center Erik Christensen has continued to show his scoring touch at the AHL level since being reassigned by the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this month. Christensen, who left Wilkes-Barre with a five-game point streak when he was summoned to Pittsburgh, has picked up at least one point in each of his four games since rejoining the AHL Pens, giving him a nine-game point streak (8+9=17) headed into Friday's game against the Senators.

Friday, January 20 - PENGUINS @ Binghamton Senators

NOTES:

The Penguins are 2-0-0-0 against the Senators this season, winning 5-1 at home on Oct. 22 and 4-1 on the road on Nov. 26. Erik Christensen had four points (1+3) in his only appearance against the Senators this season, and leads all Penguins in points and assists against Binghamton this year. Dany Sabourin made a season-high 42 saves in the Pens 4-1 win on Nov. 26. This is the third of eight meetings between the teams this season

Saturday, January 21 - Bridgeport Sound Tigers @ PENGUINS

The Penguins are 3-2-0-0 against Bridgeport this year, winning once at home and twice on the road. The Sound Tigers are the only team in the East Division with more than one regulation win against the Penguins, posting a 2-1 victory on December 21 and a 3-1 win on Jan. 8, with both wins coming in Bridgeport. The two teams will meet three times in a less than two weeks, with all three games (Jan. 21, Jan. 25 and Feb. 3) taking place in Wilkes-Barre.

INDIVIDUAL LEAGUE LEADERS (all stats as of 1/19)

Dany Sabourin is first overall with a 1.96 goals against average, first with a .934 save percentage, tied for third with 17 wins and tied for second with three shutouts. Alain Nasreddine is first overall with a plus-22 rating. Ryan Lannon is third overall with plus-19 rating. Noah Welch is tied for 10th with a plus-14 rating. Dennis Bonvie is second overall with 225 penalty minutes. Daniel Carcillo is fourth overall with 204 penalty minutes.

ATTENDANCE

The Penguins are averaging 8,155 fans per home game this season (154,956 in 19 games), 100% of capacity.
