Iowa Chops News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Iowa Stars and the Grand Rapids Griffins met for the second time in Michigan, and their third meeting overall, on Wednesday night. Despite a hat-trick by Stars forward Mathias Tjarnqvist, the Stars fell 6-3 to the number one team in the Western Conference. The sixth goal came via an empty-net.
On just the second shot of the game for Iowa, Tjarnqvist scored his 10th goal of the season to give the Stars an early 1-0 lead. The power play goal was his third such goal and the 22nd time the Stars have scored the maiden-marker. Just about 10 minutes later, Don MacLean scored two straight goals and gave the Griffins a lead they would not relinquish. MacLean finished with three goals and one assist for his second straight game with a hat-trick.
At 1:07 and 10:28 of the second period, Tjarnqvist potted his second and third goals of the game. In doing so, the Swedish-born forward became the first Stars player to record a hat-trick. He now has 12 goals and four assists in 16 games: 16(12/4/16). Six of his 12 games have seen him record multiple points, including three multi-goal games. David Oliver picked-up an assist on Tjarnqvist's second tally, giving him a four-game point-streak: 4(2/2/4).
Goalie Dan Ellis faced 41 shots in the loss.
Attendance was 3,709. Power-play chances: IOWA: 1 for 3; GRAND RAPIDS: 1 for 5
