WOLVES BLITZ KNIGHTS, 7-3
January 18, 2006
Rosemont, IL - The Chicago Wolves scored five powerplay goals en route to a 7-3 win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. It was the most goals and the most powerplay goals allowed by the Knights this season.
The Wolves earned the lead during a five-on-three man advantage. Kip Miller finished off a nifty passing play by ramming the puck into a half-empty net to put the Wolves up 1-0. That lead doubled in the last 30 seconds of the period when Jared Ross jammed the puck underneath Curtis McElhinney during another Chicago powerplay.
The Knights drew to within one early in the second period when Eric Nystrom walked down the left wing and threw a wrist shot past goalie Michael Garnett. Tim Hambly and Mark Giordano picked up the assists.
The Wolves continued to make good use of the powerplay. Later in the period, the Knights coughed up the puck in front of McElhinney and Derek MacKenzie rammed the puck through traffic for his second goal of the season.
MacKenzie was at it again late in the period when he took advantage of another turnover and beat McElhinney with a deflected wrist shot to make it 4-1 after two.
Ross seemed to squelch all hopes of a Knights comeback when he scored just 2:27 into the third period to make it 5-1.
But the Knights gave the Wolves reason to worry when Brandon Prust tipped in a shot by Hambly on the powerplay, and Nystrom tallied his second of the night less than two minutes later. But the Wolves would erase any comeback chances with powerplay goals by MacKenzie and Ramzi Abid to win 7-3.
The Knights are now 16-19-1-7. They continue the three-in-three stretch on Thursday when they travel to Milwaukee to face the Admirals at 7:00 p.m. The Knights finish the week on Friday when they host the Manchester Monarchs at 7:00 p .m.
