Penguins Pitch Franchise-Record Third-Straight Shutout in 3-0 Win
December 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins continued their strong string of recent play with a
3-0 shutout win against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at PPL Center on Wednesday night.
It was the third-straight game that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton shut out its opponent, a franchise record. Furthermore, the Penguins have yet to surrender a goal since Jay Leach took over as interim head coach on Saturday, Dec. 12.
"It's just a testament to the guys we have in the room," Leach said. "They continue to do the right things. They're executing... We're just trying to preach the way we've wanted to play since day one."
Tristan Jarry earned his second consecutive shutout with 17 saves and extended his personal shutout streak to 144:02. Jarry hasn't allowed an even strength goal since the third period of a game against the Hershey Bears on Nov. 28.
"A game like this, I think [Jarry] fits pretty well in," Leach said. "He just sits back there, nothing really rattles him, and he made some key saves. There were some tipped shots, and a rush in the first period he made a nice save on."
Clark Seymour struck at 9:54 of the opening period for his first career AHL goal, putting the Penguins up 1-0.
Phantoms goalie Jason LaBarbera gave an errant pass to Jean-Sébastien Dea who then put the puck in the open net for his eighth goal of the season and the Penguins' second goal of the game.
Bryan Rust added his first goal of the year at 13:28 of the third after a tic-tac-toe passing play with Tim Erixon and Will O'Neill to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 3-0 lead.
LaBarbera made 22 saves as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot Lehigh Valley, 25-17.
Both teams failed to score on the three power plays they were given over the course of the game.
The Penguins head back home for a match-up with the Toronto Marlies on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The first meeting of the season between Toronto and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is an Eyewitness News Fan Fridays game, featuring $14 tickets and $2 beers on select drafts from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Start time for the top two teams in the AHL standings is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
