Albany Devils Downed by St. John's IceCaps
December 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NF - For the second-straight game, the Albany Devils (16-7-3-0) ran into a strong netminder in a St. John's IceCaps jersey. A day after unleashing a season-high 46 shots in a 3-2 setback at MileOne Centre, the Devils again had 46 attempts, but lost 5-1 to the IceCaps (14-7-5-2) Wednesday.
Blake Pietila spoiled St. John's netminder Eddie Pasquale's shutout with an unassisted tally during the second period. Pasquale finished the game with 44 stops.
IceCaps' center Michael McCarron had a hat trick. Angelo Miceli and Joel Hanley also scored.
Yann Danis replaced Scott Wedgewood between the pipes after the first 8:29 with the score at 3-0. Danis made 15 stops in his first relief appearance of the season.
HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES
- Albany, which had a combined 92 shots in two games at St. John's, had 21 shots during the third period, tying Tuesday's third-period effort for most shots in a single period this season.
- Pietila registered his fifth goal of the season and first since Nov. 13 at Providence. The rookie has eight points (5g-3a) in 24 appearances.
- Mike Sislo, who leads the team with 22 points and 13 goals, was helped off the ice on a stretcher during the first period. He appeared to be injured after a St. John's player fell awkwardly on his right leg. Sislo returned in time for the start of the season period and finished with eight shots on goal.
TURNING POINT
McCarron scored just 30 seconds and set the tone for the remainder of the first period. Not only did the IceCaps score two more times before the end of the period, there was major concern when Sislo was wheeled off after his injury.
Albany had only allowed three goals in a period one other time this season, which came during the second frame against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Nov. 21.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT
Just seconds after the opening faceoff, McCarron found himself all alone in front of the Devils net as the puck was worked in the right corner. Bud Holloway sent a pass through a mass of Albany players and found McCarron, who deked Wedgewood to open the scoring.
St. John's added to its lead when Miceli grabbed a rebound and slide a shot under Wedgewood at 6:21 and McCarron scored again -- this time on the power play -- at 8:29.
Albany made a push in the second period, owning an 18-7 shot advantage, but wasn't able to make up any ground. Pietila scored on a wrister from the left circle at 15:07, but Hanley made it 4-1 at 18:06.
McCarron finished the hat trick thanks to Michael Bournival's pass through the Devils crease, allowing IceCaps center to redirect the puck past Danis at 12:50.
