Falcons Fall Behind Early, Lose to Pirates

Portland, ME - The Springfield Falcons allowed three goals in the first period and lost by a 5-2 score against the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena.

John McFarland scored just 2:29 into the first period to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. His seventh of the year was assisted by Chase Balisy and Rob Schremp. Portland converted on back-to-back power plays with Kyle Rau goals at 12:47 and 19:18. His first power play goal was assisted by Shane Harper and Mackenzie Weegar Harper and Greg Mckegg assisted on the second goal while playing five-on-three. The tallies were Rau's tenth and eleventh goals of the year to complete the scoring in the frame.

Neither team was able to score during the second period. Falcons goaltender Niklas Treutle turned aside seven shots while Pirates netminder Mike McKenna made nine saves.

Rob Schremp opened the third period with a goal just 1:18 in. His twelfth of the season was assisted by Balisy as he beat Treutle glove side. The Falcons would respond with a goal from Greg Carey who deflected a slap shot from Corey Potter. His ninth of the season was scored at 3:41 and also assisted by Dustin Jeffrey. McFarland would score his second of the night and eighth of the year at 10:09 with assists from Brett Olson and Weegar. Greg Carey finished the game's scoring with a wrist shot that beat McKenna low stick side at 17:14. His second of the night and tenth of the year was assisted by Alex Grant and Justin Hache.

The Falcons finished the game going 0-6 on the power play and allowed two goals while on the penalty kill. Treutle made 20 saves in the loss while McKenna stopped 30 shots.

The Falcons return home to the MassMutual Center this Friday for a 7 p.m. puck drop against the Utica Comets that features the Balisle Ford Holiday Wrap Up celebration. 25 different seats will be decorated with wrapping paper to notify the fan has won a prize. The prizes will range from a Balise Ford hat to an interior detail gift card with a grand prize of $100 cash. Team autographed ornaments will also be on sale for $10 with the proceeds donated to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. On Saturday, the Falcons play the Providence Bruins at 7 p.m. with Rene Rancourt performing the National Anthem.
