Penguins Head into All-Star Break with OT Win over Admirals

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton captain Tom Kostopoulos celebrated his 36th birthday by scoring the game-winning goal at 3:08 of overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 win on Saturday at the Norfolk Scope and a sweep of their two-game weekend set versus the Norfolk Admirals.

The game was tied at one after two periods, before Penguins forward Scott Wilson netted the go-ahead goal midway through the third for the second straight night. Battling in the near corner of the Admirals zone, Bryan Rust bankhanded a pass to the circle that Wilson whipped past the blocker of Norfolk goalie Jason LaBarbera at 10:55. The tally extended Wilson's goal-scoring streak to four games (5G).

Skating on a 4-on-3 power play later in the period, Norfolk would ultimately force overtime when Nic Kerdiles tipped a wrist shot from Brendan Bell over the shoulder of Penguins goaltender Matt Murray with 5:13 remaining in regulation.

In the overtime period, an early man-advantage for the Penguins would fall by the wayside, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton notched the decisive goal a short time later as Nick Drazenovic's centering feed ricocheted off of Kostopoulos and settled on the other side of the goal line. A quick review confirmed that the goal stood and the Penguins enter the AHL All-Star Break on a three-game winning streak and with a record of 23-17-1-3.

The Admirals took the 1-0 lead at 6:45 of the first when William Karlsson outmuscled his man behind the Penguins net and sent a quick pass that Emerson Etem tapped by Murray.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was able to answer back less than three minutes later after Tom Kuhnhackl's bid from the slot was blocked, but Jayson Megna gathered the loose puck and lifted it past a fallen LaBarbera for his 12th goal of the season.

Murray earned his fifth win in his last six starts and raised his record to 10-7-2 on the season with 23 saves on 25 shots. LaBarbera fell to 5-7-2, stopping 27-of-30.

The Penguins return from the AHL All-Star Break to face the Springfield Falcons on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m. Listen on WILK Newsradio or watch online at AHL Live.
