Providence Bruins News Release
SPRINGFIELD, M.A. - Colin Stuart and the Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 2-1 Saturday night at the Mass Mutual Center.
The Bruins wasted no time on the power play, scoring on their first opportunity in the first period. Seth Griffith registered his second power play point of the weekend on a wrister from the blue line that beat Anton Forsberg at 5:58. A minute and a half later, Rob Flick fought Springfield captain Ryan Craig, receiving most of the punches, but launching Craig onto his back on the ground. Both teams had more power play chances, including 0:58 of a 5-on-3 for the Bruins, but neither team could score.
For the second night in a row, the home team tied the game at 1-1 in the middle period. Before the Falcons' goal, Lucas Sedlak had a breakaway that Malcolm Subban saved. Springfield also hit the post. On the same rush, Sean Collins worked through the zone, eventually drawing a penalty on Alexander Khokhlachev. On the ensuing power play, the home team lit the lamp. Michael Chaput somehow stuffed one past Subban inside the near post in traffic as Subban lost his stick. The Bruins' netminder picked up a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play. The Massachusetts squad thought it had a lead at 15:20, as an Austin Madaisky wrister beat Subban, but Malcolm was knocked over by Chaput, so it was immediately ruled no goal.
Providence scored the only goal of the third (and only even-strength goal). Despite having a 3-on-1 in the offensive zone, the Falcons couldn't convert. Subban made the stop on Sean Collins' shot less than a minute into the frame. Khokhlachev carried the puck over the blue line, feeding Griffth. Seth found Stuart at the top of the slot for a one-timer that put the visiting team up for good at 4:26.
The victory was the first on the road in 2015 for the P-Bruins. Their last "W" away from the Dunk was on December 30 in Albany, a 3-2 win over the Devils (when Ethan Werek scored with less than 0:10 left to win it).
Adam Cracknell-- who had the game-winner in the last game between the teams (a 2-1 contest earlier this month)-- had a golden opportunity in front, but his backhander went over the crossbar during the 6-on-5.
The Bruins' next game is post-All-Star-Break, on Friday at 7:05pm against the Worcester Sharks at home. (Khokhlachev is the lone Providence representative that will be in Utica, with David Pastrnak in Boston.)
PROVIDENCE SCORING:
#17 Seth Griffith (#24 Ryan Spooner, #37 Zach Trotman, PPG)
#49 Colin Stuart (Griffith, #13 Alexander Khokhlachev)
PROVIDENCE GOALTENDING:
#47 Malcolm Subban (30 saves on 31 shots)
