Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (34-28), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, won their fourth straight game Monday, edging the Frederick Keys (33-29) 2-1 at TicketReturn.com Field. With the win the Pelicans will enter play Tuesday with at least a share for first place in the southern division.
In the deepest outing of his career, right-hander Nick Martinez (5-3) worked eight strong innings to grab the win. The all-star righty allowed one earned run and scattered three hits with five strikeouts. Ryan Harvey got a 6-4-3 double play in the ninth inning and got the final three outs to earn his second save.
"We had a plan going in and me and [Kellin] Deglan did a great job executing that game plan," Martinez said. "He did a great job calling pitches tonight and sticking to the plan. My defense behind me was spectacular. Edwin [Garcia] and [Chris] Grayson made some great plays behind me."
Kevin Torres gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Pelicans threatened to add more in the inning but stranded the bases loaded. The Keys tied the game on a solo home run from Michael Ohlman in the fourth.
A Trever Adams RBI groundout gave the Pelicans a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.
Right-hander Zach Davies (4-3) took the loss for the Keys, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over six innings.
The Keys had the potential tying run aboard in the eighth and ninth innings but the Pelicans got a pair of timely double plays. Sammie Starr hit into a double play in the eighth inning and Jerome Pena rolled two in the ninth
The Pelicans continue a three-game series Tuesday with the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field. Left-hander Victor Payano (4-3, 3.86) will be opposed by Keys' left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (6-2, 2.94). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.
Tomorrow Tuesday the team celebrates $2 for Tuesday with $2 craft beers and will unveil its new Pelicans brew for the first time in a pre-game ceremony in Hops Heaven at TicketReturn.Com Field. The Pelicans brew is a collaborative with the Pelicans and New South Brewery in Myrtle Beach to create a beer specifically for the ballpark. Also on Tuesday, the first 1,000 fans will receive a Jeff Francoeur poster courtesy of Sheriar Press and 100.3 The Team. Wiener Wednesday will feature $1 hot dogs while Thursday's contest will include postgame fireworks presented by Massage Envy Spa. Tickets are available online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com or by phone at 918-6000.
