Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Sox and Rocks: It's once again time for the late Dr. Seuss's favorite Carolina League series, with Salem hosting Wilmington to kick off the final homestand of the first half. The Boston and Kansas City affiliates met eight times in the span of 11 days back in late April and early May, with both teams winning three out of four at home. Both squads are on the outside looking in at their respective first-half divisional title chase, with the Rocks trailing the first-place Nationals by six games in the Northern Division and the Sox trailing both Myrtle Beach and Winston by five and a half. Salem will finish the half with eight games (in seven days) at home.
The (Hill)Cat in the Hat: After splitting four games in two days against Lynchburg, the Route 460 rivals go their separate ways for a few days before reuniting at LewisGale Field on Thursday. The Sox and Cats will play their third doubleheader in six days on Thursday before wrapping up the first half with single games Friday through Sunday. The Red Sox' 6-3 record against the Hillcats is their best mark against any Carolina League club in the first half of 2013.
Hop on Pop: Salem hit homers in both of its weekend wins in Lynchburg, with Sunday's grand slam serving as a crucial turningpoint to the series finale with the Hillcats. David Renfroe launched Salem's second slam of the year to transform a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Sox are now one of four teams (along with Potomac, Winston, and Frederick) in the Carolina League with two grand slams this season, while the other four teams have none. Henry Ramos also went yard at City Stadium on Saturday, his third round-tripper since last Wednesday. In his last six games, Ramos is hitting .421 (8-for-19) with three homers, six RBI and two stolen bases.
Oh, the Places You'll Go: Playing in three of the four games against Lynchburg, Garin Cecchini went 5-for-10 to bring his season average to .354. He's one of three qualifiers batting above .300 in the league. Carolina's Tyler Naquin and Potomac's Billy Burns are hitting .307 and .302, respectively. Cecchini is one of three Salem Sox heading to San Jose for the Carolina-California League All-Star game, scheduled for a week from tomorrow out west. It's Cecchini's third straight year as an All-Star, something he achieved with Lowell in the NYPL in 2011 and with Greenville in the SAL last year.
On Beyond Zebra: As a team, Salem is hitting .290 so far in June, by far its best batting average for any month this season. The Sox hit .236 in April and .242 in May, and their .290 clip in June is #1 in the circuit so far. Six different members of the Sox (Carson Blair, Garin Cecchini, Keury De La Cruz, Matt Gedman, Henry Ramos, and Tim Roberson) are batting above .300 this month.
Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!: Salem didn't score until the seventh in game one and the fourth in game two, but the Sox did extend their streak to 81 straight games with at least one run. The Sox have not been shutout since August 12, 2012 at Wilmington. Salem is the only team in the CL to score at least one in every game so far in 2013.
