Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
LAST SERIES ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans swept the Carolina Mudcats in a three-game series at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans routed the Mudcats in game one but had to come from behind to win the final two games. Trever Adams paced the Pelicans in the series finishing 7-for-14 with a home run and four RBIs.
GAME OF INCHES ... Even though Winston-Salem beat Wilmington Sunday, the Pelicans (.541) are percentage points ahead of the Dash (.540). The Pelicans haven't trailed in the division since entering play a game back on April 21st. The Pelicans play eight more games in the first half, but none against the Dash. In its final seven games, the Dash play Wilmington (31-32) four times and Lynchburg (32-29) three times.
ALL-STARS.. The Pelicans have five midseason All-Star selections, the most in the Carolina League. Right-handers Nick Martinez, Luke Jackson and Alec Asher join infielders Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas. The California League and Carolina League announced their All-Star rosters today in anticipation of the 2013 California-Carolina League All-Star Game at Municipal Stadium on June 18.
WALK THIS WAY ... The Pelicans recent series sweep was aided by a flurry free passes issued by the Mudcats. Twice in the series the Pelicans received a season-best seven walks. In total, the Pelicans drew 18 walks in the three-game set.
UP NEXT ... The Pelicans are scheduled to play eight home games in the final seven days of the first half. Tonight is a "Make a Splash Monday" presented by HTC - fans who bring in an item listed on the "Backpack Buddies" donation list will receive half priced admission. Tomorrow the first 1,000 fans will receive a Jeff Francoeur poster presented by Sheriar Press and 100.3 The Team. Craft Beers will also sell for $2.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
