THE HILLCATS: Split a doubleheader with Salem Red Sox in Lynchburg yesterday...The âCats took game one 4-1, then lost the finale 7-4...RHP Navery Moore tossed five scoreless innings in game and earned the win for Lynchburg...OF Will Skinner provided the bulk of the offense in both games...He drove in two with a double in the second inning of game one and then came around to score to give the Hillcats a 3-0 lead...He also hit a two-run blast in game two to put the âCats up 4-1 in the fourth, but a six-run fifth inning for the Red Sox was the difference...The Hillcats are now 32-29, four games behind the first place Potomac Nationals with eight games to play in the first half...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: The Hillcats are 6-2 against the Dash this year...They have won both four-game series 3-1 so far...Six of the eight games have been decided by three runs or fewer, but both clubs have tagged the other with a blowout in their opponents ballpark...The Hillcats downed the Dash 15-8 at BB&T April 25, and the Dash hustled the Hillcats 15-6 at City Stadium May 1...In the regular season last year, the two clubs split the season-series 10-10...The Hillcats went 4-6 at BB&T Ballpark, losing both three-game sets 2-1, and splitting the four-game series...That's exactly how the series played out in Lynchburg as well...
ON THE ROAD: Last week, the Hillcats went 1-5 in a week-long road trip, losing one game to rain...They split four games at home this past weekend, and are back on the road for a week starting tonight...Fortunately for the âCats they went 3-1 last time they visited BB&T Ballpark, and outscored the Dash 24-14...
BIRTHDAY BOY: OF Will Skinner turned 24 yesterday and celebrated by going 3-for-6 with a double, home runs, four RBI, and two runs scored in the doubleheader against Salem...The home run was his seventh of the season, and he now has 27 RBI...He also raised he batting average up to an even .200 (25-for-125)...This is the first time his batting clip has reached .200 since he was hitting exactly on the "Mendoza Line" after a 1-for-3 effort on April 10 (the fourth game of the season)...That .200 mark has been his peak average this season since going 0-for-4 Opening Day and struggling through April (.104)...Currently on a three-game hitting streak (4-for-8) with two homers, a double, five RBI, and three runs...
MOORE WINS: RHP Navery Moore won his league-best seventh game of the season yesterday...He is now 5-0 in his last six starts turning in quality starts in all of those outings except yesterday when he didn't make it past five innings but did not allow a run...It was his first start all season in which he held the opposition scoreless...After going 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA in April, Moore is 6-1 with a 3.02 ERA from the start of May...
COMING DOWN THE STRETCH: Lynchburg is in the midst of playing 12 games in nine days to end the first half...They played back-to-back doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, and have another twin bill scheduled for Thursday in Salem...
PROSPECT WATCH: Winston-Salem Dash OF Courtney Hawkins is the number one rated prospect in the White Sox organization...After missing almost all of May, he came back June 2 of the DL...Batting .324 (11-for-34) with four home runs and 12 RBI in his first nine games back...Also has 13 strikeouts, giving him 58 overall in 113 at-bats this season...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Myles Jaye was acquired via trade with the Toronto Blue Jays prior to the 2012 season in a deal that sent big league pitcher Jason Frasor to Toronto...The Blue Jays originally drafted Jaye in the 17th round in 2010 out of Starr Mills High School (GA)...Signed late, and did not make his professional debut until 2011 with Bluefield in the Rookie Appalachian League...Went 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 games, nine starts...Reported to Low-A Kannapolis in 2012 after joining the White Sox (4-7, 6.04)...Made 17 starts for the Intimidators...Repeated in Kannapolis this year, but was promoted in May after going 4-1 with a 2.20 ERA in seven starts...Tonight is his sixth Hi-A start, and first against the Hillcats...Coming off his worst outing giving up seven runs in six innings in Salem last Wednesday...Holds a home ERA of 3.79, and a 7.94 ERA on the road...
