Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.
LAST NIGHT ... Four Pelicans pitchers combined on a one-hitter in a losing effort Sunday, as the Birds dropped a 3-2 decision against the Salem Red Sox. Though the Pelicans allowed just one hit, the Red Sox drew nine walks in the game. Jake Skole and Drew Robinson hit back-to-back solo home runs in the eighth inning. The Pelicans lost two of three games in the series and finished the trip 1-6.
POSTSEASON ... With Winston-Salem's win against Carolina, the Pelicans are now one game up in the southern division. The Pelicans and Dash each have 15 games left in the first half but no head-to-head matchups. The Pelicans have been to the playoffs the last two seasons. The Nats lead the northern division by one game.
ROSTER MOVE ... The Pelicans have added Joe Maloney to the roster following Royce Bolinger's placement on the disabled list. Maloney, 22, has posted a .224 average in 42 games for the Crawdads playing primarily at first base. In his third season with the Rangers, Maloney is making his Advanced-A debut after being selected in the 10th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Maloney has also caught in his professional career.
MAY RECAP ... The Pelicans finished May with a 14-14 record after starting the month 14-6. The Pelicans hit .243 as a team and posted a 3.28 earned run average. Royce Bolinger paced the Birds with a .323 average while Alec Asher posted a 2.31 ERA in six starts.
UP NEXT ... Tonight is a "Make a Splash Monday" presented by HTC - fans who bring in an item on the "Backpack Buddies" donation list will receive half-price admission. Tomorrow will be a "Team Tuesday" with the first 1,000 fans receiving a Craig Kimbrel poster. Wednesday will be a Wiener Wednesday featuring $1 hot dogs.
COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.
