Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (JUNE 3, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash opened Monday's doubleheader at LewisGale Field by falling to the Salem Red Sox 5-4.
Making his High-A debut, Jake Cose struggled in the first. Salem's Deven Marrero lined his second pitch right back at him, grazing the right-hander on its way up the middle. Fortunately, Cose was not injured on the play and stayed in the game.
Nick Natoli was then hit by a pitch before a Rangel Ravelo error loaded the bases. Keury De La Cruz followed by emptying the bases with a three-run triple to put the Red Sox (24-30) up early. Cose would then rebound to strand De La Cruz at third.
After his rough first inning, Cose kept the Red Sox off the board until the fourth. In that frame, Salem pushed the margin to five runs with a run-producing single from Nick Natoli and a sacrifice fly from De La Cruz, which gave the right fielder his fourth RBI of the contest.
Cose would leave after five innings of work, giving up five runs, four of which were earned, while striking out five in his Dash debut. The righty entered Monday with a 1.72 ERA, which was ninth-best among qualifiers in Minor League Baseball.
On the other side, Mike McCarthy rolled through the first four innings, but the Dash (29-27) figured him out in the fifth. Ravelo and Grant Buckner picked up consecutive hits to start the frame, putting two in scoring position for Mark Haddow, who brought Ravelo home with a ground out to get Winston on the board.
Joe De Pinto and Joey DeMichele followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Chris Curley wrapped up the inning's scoring with a run-producing single to score DeMichele, cutting Salem's lead to one. Noe Ramirez (2-0) replaced McCarthy and induced a double play ball to end the threat.
The closest the Dash would come to tying the game was in the top of the sixth. Courtney Hawkins blasted one to left field off Ramirez that just hooked foul.
The Dash and Red Sox will continue their five-game series with game two of Monday's doubleheader at LewisGale Field. Right-hander Jason Van Skike (2-1, 1.71 ERA) will start for Winston-Salem, while Salem counters with righty Kyle Kraus (first start). First pitch for game two will be at approximately 8 p.m.
The Dash's next homestand begins on Friday when they welcome the Wilmington Blue Rocks to town. The game will be followed by a fireworks show. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
