Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - Fresh off earning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors, Shawn Morimando tossed seven scoreless as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 5-1 on Monday night at Frawley Stadium. The Mudcats (20-36) snapped a four-game losing streak, and picked up their first win in Delaware this season.
Morimando (4-5) won his third straight decision, and extended his scoreless streak to 20.0 innings. The seven innings were a new career high. The left-hander from Virginia Beach, Va., struck out six, and walked two.
Bo Greenwell paced the Carolina offense with three hits and three RBI. The left fielder cracked his second home run of the year, a drive over the right field fence in the fifth.
John Lamb (4-5) took the loss for Wilmington (28-29). The southpaw allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits over five innings.
Lamb entered the game with a 14-inning scoreless streak. After working through the first, he allowed a single to Jordan Smith to begin the second. Smith advanced to third thanks to two errors on the same play. Tony Wolters hit a liner to second baseman Jack Lopez, but it skipped off his glove into center field. Lane Adams bobbled the ball, allowing Smith the extra base.
With one out, Wolters attempted to steal second. The throw from first was dropped by shortstop Yowill Espinal, and Smith scored for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Smith singled, and scored on a double by Greenwell. A hit by Wolters moved Greenwell to third. With two out, Tyler Naquin laced a single to right. Greenwell scored for a 3-0 lead.
Trailing 5-0 in the ninth, the Blue Rocks' Daniel Mateo sent a line drive just over the right field wall. His fifth home run broke up the shut out with two gone in the ninth.
The Carolina Mudcats continue their series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Tuesday night. First pitch at Frawley Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m. The Mudcats return home on Friday, June 7th.
