Pelicans Soar Past Mudcats

June 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1) - Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored a dominant 10-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats to open a weekend series on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The loss was Carolina's fourth straight, and drops the club to 20-40 overall.

Buoyed by four early runs, Joe Van Meter (1-3) picked up the win by tossing five scoreless for the Pelicans (31-28). The right-hander scattered four hits, and struck out five. Paul Schwendel hurled the final four frames, allowing a run on one hit to earn a save in the lopsided contest.

Mason Radeke (0-1) took the loss in his debut for Carolina. The right-hander surrendered five runs on six hits. Struggling with his command, Radeke walked four and fanned four.

The Pelicans got to Radeke and the Mudcats right out of the gate by scoring three in the first. Luis Sardinas, Jake Skole walked and a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position. Rougned Odor laced triple to right-center, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead. A groundout by Trever Adams scored Odor to push the lead out to 3-0.

In the fourth, the Pelicans loaded the bases on a Sardinas double and two walks. Reliever Rob Nixon entered the game with one out. A wild pitch plated Kevin Torres from third, and a sacrifice fly to center by Adams made it 5-0 Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach scored two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to center, and a throwing error on the same play. A three-run double by Skole in the ninth capped off the Pelicans scoring.

Tony Wolters broke-up the shutout bid with a two-out single in the ninth. Jordan Smith scored on the play for the final margin. Smith paced the offense with two hits, including a double.
