Offense Erupts in 10-1 Triumph over Carolina

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (31-28), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, snapped a four-game losing streak Friday with a convincing 10-1 win against the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. With Winston-Salem's win against Wilmington, the Pelicans will enter play Saturday tied for first place in the southern division.

Joe Van Meter (1-3) earned his first win of the season, hurling five shutout innings with five strikeouts. Right-hander Mason Radeke (0-1) lasted just 3.1 innings for the Mudcats, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Paul Schwendel allowed one earned run over the final four innings and earned his first save.

Rougned Odor finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Luis Sardinas and Preston Beck each tallied two hits. Jake Skole finished with three runs knocked in, slamming a bases-clearing double in the ninth inning.

Odor sparked a three-run first inning with a two-run triple. Trever Adams extended the lead with an RBI groundout. The Pelicans threatened again in the second inning, but left the bases loaded.

Kevin Torres doubled in the second inning and reached base in all five of his plate appearances. He scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Adams extended the fourth-inning lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly, his second RBI of the game.

Chris Grayson added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning which led to a throwing error on Tyler Naquin, scoring Adams all the way from second and putting the Birds up 7-0. The Mudcats committed three errors in the game and issued seven walks.

It was Van Meter's longest outing of the season while Schwendel earned his first save since last August in the South Atlantic League.

It was the Pelicans first game with more than six runs since a 12-0 win against Wilmington on May 17. All nine starters reached base and eight of nine tallied at least one hit.

The Pelicans and Mudcats play the second game of a three-game series Saturday at Five County Stadium. Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (4-3, 3.66) will be opposed by left-hander Shawn Morimando (4-5, 2.79). First pitch is on tap for 6:15 p.m. EST.

The Pelicans return home this Monday, June 10th to take on the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field. Monday is a "Make a Splash Monday" presented by HTC.
