Beck Tosses Complete Game Shutout in 5-0 Win
June 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1) - Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Chris Beck tossed his first career complete game shutout as the Winston-Salem Dash opened up their final homestand of the first half with a 5-0 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Friday night in front of 5,934 at BB&T Ballpark.
Beck (6-6) dominated throughout the game, retiring 10 straight after a Justin Trapp single in the first. The righty celebrated his selection to the Carolina League All-Star Team by surrendering just five hits and striking out a career-high tying seven. The complete game shutout is just the second nine-inning complete game shutout in the Dash era (2009-present). Matt Heidenreich also accomplished the feat against Salem on June 25, 2012.
The Dash (32-29) wasted no time in getting to Blue Rocks' starter Kyle Zimmer (0-6). The first three Winston hitters all notched hits against the righty, with Joey DeMichele and Chris Curley picking up singles and Kevan Smith driving in a run with a double.
One out later, Courtney Hawkins belted a double to deep center, bringing both Curley and Smith around. After Mark Haddow was hit by a pitch and Grant Buckner walked to load the bases with two outs, Adam Heisler sent one right up the middle for a two-run single. Zimmer, the top prospect in the Royals' system according to Baseball America, did not face another batter after Heisler.
That five-run first frame would be plenty for Beck. The right-hander needed just 90 pitches on the night, getting a little help from his defense as he had two double plays turned behind him.
After their five-run first, the Dash bats went quiet against Wilmington's bullpen. The Blue Rocks' relievers combined to throw seven and one-third innings with just four hits and one walk surrendered. The bullpen trio of Spencer Patton, Robinson Yambati and Andrew Triggs combined for nine strikeouts.
The Dash and Blue Rocks continue their three-game series Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Jake Cose (0-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound, while Wilmington will counter with southpaw John Lamb (4-5, 5.75 ERA). Coverage on wsdash.com begins with the Pregame Dash at 6:45, and first pitch is scheduled for 7. The game will also be shown live on My 48 in the Winston-Salem area.
