Four Mudcats Named to 2013 Carolina League All-Star Team
June 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1) - Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina League announced the All-Star roster for the 2013 showdown with the California League in San Jose, Calif., today. Four players, including a pair of the Cleveland Indians' first round draft picks, will represent the Carolina Mudcats in the annual mid-summer classic.
Shortstop Francisco Lindor, center fielder Tyler Naquin, and first baseman Jerrud Sabourin will be in the starting lineup for the Carolina League. Right-handed pitcher Cody Anderson was also named to the All-Star team.
The game between the All-Stars of the Carolina League and the best of the California League will take place at Municipal Stadium on June 18. Carolina's four players selected were the second most, behind five from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
"I'm very proud of our All-Stars," manager David Wallace said. "Each are very deserving, and will be great representatives of the Cleveland Indians, Carolina Mudcats and the Carolina League."
Tyler Naquin, selected 15th overall in the 2012 draft, has become one of the best hitters in the CL. He is the third Mudcat to lead the league in hits, owning 73. His .309 batting average is third best in the league. The Spring, Texas, native ranks second in the CL with 25 extra base hits, and has the second most doubles with 18. Naquin also leads the Mudcats with 22 RBI and four home runs.
Francisco Lindor, selected 8th overall in the 2011 draft by Cleveland, has formed a potent 1-2 punch with Naquin this season. Batting second in the order, the native Puerto Rican owns a .301 batting average, fourth best in the CL. The 19-year-old owns 20 mult-hit efforts, 66 hits total, 13 stolen bases and the league's longest on-base streak at 25 straight from April 22 to May 17.
Jerrud Sabourin has been a model of consistency at the plate this summer. His .310 average is second best in the league. From San Diego, Calif., Sabourin tied a franchise record for walks in a game with four on May 11 against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Sabourin has totaled 52 hits, 11 doubles and 20 RBI on the year.
Cody Anderson earns his first All-Star nod after a stellar first half campaign. The ace of the Mudcats starting rotation, Anderson owns a 5-3 record with a 2.85 ERA in 66.1 innings. The Quincy, Calif., native has struck out 62 batters to only 17 walks. Anderson went 26.1 innings from April 27 to May 19 without allowing a walk. The right-hander, drafted in the 14th round in 2011, made three straight quality starts from May 9 to May 19.
