Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The first inning of the Pelicans' second game of a three-game series with the Kinston Indians was offensively encouraging. Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, it was also the complete opposite of the rest of the night.

The Pelicans plated a single run on two hits in the first and didn't have another player reach via hit until the ninth in a 4-1 loss to the Indians in front of 2,714 at BB&T Coastal Field.

As it was in Tuesday night's series opener, game two was defined by pitching until the late innings. The Pelicans got a one-out single by Cole Miles in the bottom of the first, and he later scored on a Donell Linares RBI single. No other Pelican reached on a hit until Linares's second single in the ninth. The Pelicans sent the minimum to the plate in four separate innings against Kinston starter Eric Berger whose only blemish was allowing four walks. Berger (4-4) struck out five and allowed just one run on two hits over six and a third innings in the win.

Kinston's offense didn't wake up until the seventh, after Myrtle Beach starter Jose Ortegano departed following six shutout innings. Ortegano allowed three K-Tribe hits and struck out six without issuing a walk, but the Indians broke through against the Pelicans' bullpen, plating two in the seventh on RBI singles by Lucas Montero and Tim Fedroff against Michael Broadway (0-5) and Eric Barrett.

For the second straight night, the Pelicans missed out on opportunities in the late innings, this time squandering a golden chance in the bottom of the eighth of what was then a 3-1 game. Myrtle Beach got Randy Gress and C.J. Lee aboard on back-to-balk walks to open the frame, and Miles sacrificed them to second and third. Freddie Freeman hit a sharp line drive to second base caught by Cord Phelps, however, and Lee was doubled off on a close throw back to the bag to end the inning.

Kinston added runs in the eighth and ninth, and Dallas Cawiezell (S, 7) closed it out for the Indians who have won consecutive games for just the second time since May 9.

The three-game series wraps up tomorrow at BB&T Coastal Field. Myrtle Beach will send right-hander Erik Cordier (2-2, 2.86) against southpaw Russell Young (0-3, 6.37) for Kinston. Tickets are available by contacting the Pelicans box office at (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
