Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (79-39, 34-14) vs. Salem Avalanche (16-32, 46-72)
Monday, August 11 -- 7:07 PM
Salem Memorial Stadium -- Salem, VA
Game #119, Road Game #62
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans had their franchise record 11-game win-streak snapped with a 5-3 loss to Lynchburg in the series finale on Saturday. However, the birds continue to boast the best home (39-18), road (40-21) and overall (79-39) records in the Carolina League. They enter a four-game series with the Salem Avalanche to close out the season series between the two clubs. Myrtle Beach has dominated the season set thus far this season, claiming 12-of-16 meetings, including posting a 5-2 mark in Salem. This series will feature the make-up game from a postponement at BB&T Coastal Field on July 10th as the teams play a doubleheader on Tuesday night beginning at 6:07 PM.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: In a right-left matchup, the Pelicans send lefty Cole Rorhbough for the first time against right-hander Chad Wagler.
Rorhbough: Will be making his first start for the Pelicans following a promotion for low-class A Rome. He closed his stint in the Sally League in style, twirling eight innings against the Hickory Crawdads, allowing just an unearned run on one hit. A start prior, he fanned 11 Greensboro Grasshoppers, but was saddled with a loss. All told, in 12 starts and 13 total appearances, the lefty posted a 2-3 record and ERA of 4.94.
The 21-year old native of Medford, OR, was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2006 draft by the Braves out of Western Nevada Junior College. He dazzled in his first professional season in 2007, making stops in Danville (3-2, 1.08) and Rome (2-0, 1.29).
Wagler: After a dominating beginning to his season and then transition to the starting rotation, the right-hander has proven mortal in his last two starts. He allowed three earned runs in each, turning in six innings against Frederick his last time out and lasting 4.1 the start prior against Kinston. He has made just one appearance against the Pelicans, working a scoreless 1.2 innings against them.
A native of Canton, OH, Wagler was selected in the 22nd round of the 200 draft out of Kent State University. Interestingly, he will start tonight against Rohrbough, also selected in the same round and year. Wagler spent the entire 2007 season with Lexington (SAL) and posted a 5.08 ERA in 45 appearances, 44 in relief.
MOST WINS IN MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: The 2008 Myrtle Beach Pelicans currently have the most wins (79) in all of Minor League Baseball. The second most wins belong to Scranton Wilkes-Barre (75), the Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees. The Pelicans are one of only 12 clubs to have 70 or more wins. The Pelicans also own the best winning percentage of all full-season minor league teams (.669) and will have the opportunity to become the only 80-game winner in minor league baseball tonight.
ALL-STAR TRANSACTION: The Pelicans swapped All-Star right-handers on the disabled list today, activating RHP Kyle Cofield, who is expected to pitch in relief in game one. To make room, RHP Ryne Reynoso was placed on the seven-day DL with what is being termed as an illness. Cofield has been on the DL since July 26th with shoulder tendonitis.
COUNTDOWN TO ATTENDANCE RECORD: With 12 home contests remaining in 2008, the Pelicans are pulling closer to the overall 10-year franchise attendance record of 234,019 (2000). The Pelicans are currently 36,318 fans shy of eclipsing the mark.
