Salem, VA - The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, dropped game one of a four game series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Monday night, 9-5 at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Avs began the game with the offensive momentum, loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first, but Pelicans starter Cole Rohrbough finagled his way out of the jam unscathed. The game's first runs came in the Myrtle Beach second when Ernesto Mejia led off with a solo homer run to deep left field. Tyler Flowers followed with a double and later scored on a Concepcion Rodriguez double-play groundout.

The Beach added to its lead in the fourth and fifth, tagging Salem starter Chad Wagler for three more runs. The rush was headlined by back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth from Gorkys Hernandez and Willie Cabrera. Both would score to make it 5-0.

Salem mounted a comeback at that point, scoring three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth on six singles from Kevin Carkeek, Greg Buchanan, Tim Torres, Mark Ori, Nick Moresi and Cesar Quintero. The pulled the game within a run at 5-4.

But Myrtle Beach pulled away in the late innings flashing another burst of power with Mejia's second homer of the game - a two run blast in the seventh to make it 7-4. The Pelicans would add two more runs and Salem one of its own in the ninth to set the final score a 9-5.

Moresi and Jhon Florentino each had three hits and an RBI for Salem.

Tomorrow pits the Avalanche and Pelicans against each other in double-header fashion. Game one is set to begin at 6:07 with Avs lefty Sergio Severino tossing against Myrtle Beach's Brett Butts. Game two is slated to begin about 30 minutes following the completion of the first contest.
