Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Carolina League announced today that Pelicans catcher Tyler Flowers was named the Carolina League Player of the Week and Pelicans reliever Jaye Chapman was named Pitcher of the Week, for the week of August 4th through August 10th. The Pelicans now lead the Carolina League in weekly awards with eight.
Flowers' week started with the rare opportunity to catch future Hall-of-Famer Tom Glavine, who was making a rehabilitation start for the Pelicans. Flowers, who received glowing praise from Glavine following his start, went 2-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs. He also belted two home runs. In five games this past week, Flowers hit .556 (10-18) with three home runs, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. He walked four times and only struck out once. After his stellar week, Flowers now ranks near the top in several pertinent offensive categories including: ninth in batting average (.295), third in RBIs (75), second in on-base percentage (.436) and fifth in slugging percentage (.500).
Since being promoted from the Rome Braves on July 6th, Chapman had by far his most accomplished week with the Pelicans. In two appearances, he tossed 6.2 scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits. Chapman also recorded five strikeouts without surrendering a free pass. He earned his first two wins of the season. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Lynchburg Hillcats on August 8th, he hurled 5.2 innings of shutout relief to help the Pelicans defeat the Hillcats 10-4. Chapman's ERA dwindled from 4.35 to 2.65 in his last two outings.
With the assistance of the two weekly award winners, the Pelicans went 6-1 this past week. They took series' from the Kinston Indians and the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Pelicans are 5.5 games clear of the Kinston Indians atop the Southern Division.
Flowers and Chapman add to a growing list of Pelicans that have received Carolina League weekly honors. Tommy Hanson took home Pitcher of the Week in weeks one and two of the season. Following week three, Brandon Hicks was named the Player of the Week. The next week, Ernesto Mejia was named the Player of the Week. The Carolina League named Ryne Reynoso Pitcher of the Week during week eight. Two weeks later, Travis Jones was named the Player of the Week.
The Pelicans return to the Grand Strand on Thursday, August 14th to begin a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals. Great seats still remain for the upcoming series. Call the Pelicans Box Office at 843-918-6000 or visit the Pelicans online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
