Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WHAT HAPPENED WAS...: For the second straight night the Pelicans faced an early deficit. Salem plated a run in the first inning to go up 1-0 but that would be all the Sox would get against the Pelican pitching staff. The Peli- cans went on to claim a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer by Cole Miles in the third. The Birds added a pair of insur- ance runs in the sixth off Red Sox starter Seth Garrison. The Pelican relievers were solid again. Three relievers combined to go 3.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out four without issuing a single walk. Thompson issued the only walk by a Pelican pitcher on the night. He took the win going 5.2 innings and allowing just the one run on seven hits.
CORDIER: Erik has pitched much better his last two times out. He has allowed just three earned runs over his last 12 innings. He did a better job of limiting his walks in his last start which has been a problem from him at times this season. Over five innings in his last start he walked only three which was down from six in his previous start. For the season, the hard throwing right hander has struck out only six more batters than he's walked, 58 and 52. This will be the third time this season that Cordier has faced the Red Sox. In two starts he has gone 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA. He hasn't gone five innings in either start. His last time facing the Sox he went 4.1 innings and al- lowed four runs on six hits and walked a season-high six. Both starts were made at home where he has struggled this year. At BB&T Coastal Field he's 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA while on the road he's gone 2-1 with a 1.94 ERA.
WEILAND: Kyle Weiland has seen his ERA steadily decline since allowing five runs to Winston-Salem on 5/23. Since that start he has allowed more than two earned runs only one time. That was on 7/10 against Wilmington. In that span of 11 starts he hasn't allowed a run in five of them. The highly touted pitching prospect has had a short leash this season. He hasn't pitched more than six innings in any start this season. He has walked exactly two batters in each of his last four starts and hasn't pitched past the fifth in any of his last three outings. The Pelicans are facing Weiland for the fifth time this year, but the righty's been tough on the Birds in his first four efforts. He has gone 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA over 20 innings. The Pelicans have hit just .213 against the former 3rd round pick out of Notre Dame.
WELCOME BACK: Donell Linares and Cody Johnson return to the Pelicans' lineup after brief absences. Donell was serving a minor two game disciplinary suspension and Cody hasn't played since July 29 because of a strained oblique. The outfielder will return to the lineup tonight as the designated hitter. Prior to the injury Johnson had hit safely in six straight games. Donell has enjoyed a lot of success this season against the Red Sox. He's hit .298 in 12 games against the Sox.
GETTING IT DONE: With Cody Johnson returning to the lineup there are a couple of notable active streaks for the Pelicans. Cody has a six-game streak in the works but he has missed the last five games with injury. Jesus Sucre is enjoying a modest hit-streak as well. The Pelican first baseman has hit safely in eight straight games. His aver- age has climbed a bit but has leveled off at about .223. He has only two multi-hit games over his streak, both two-hit games.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: Since Michael Broadway entered the Pelicans' 14-9 loss to the Potomac Nationals on July 27 with two outs in the seventh inning, Myrtle Beach's bullpen has been nearly untouchable. Pelicans relievers have combined to toss 26.2 innings since that time, allowing five runs (three earned) on 15 hits, good for a staff 1.03 ERA. The bullpen has struck out 32 batters over that span against 12 walks.
OUT FOR THE YEAR: Infielder Chad Lundahl had X-Rays taken on his wrist yesterday and the results were posi- tive for a fracture. The injury requires 4-6 weeks for full recovery meaning that he will miss the remainder of the season. He was placed on the disabled list today where he will remain for the rest of the season. Lundahl was hit by a pitch from Stephen Fife in the fifth inning of last night's game. He stayed in to run but was removed in favor of Robert Marcial the next defensive inning. Lundahl was hitting .157 through 60 games with a pair of homers and 12 RBI before sustaining the injury. Lundahl missed time at the start of the season due to an oblique injury. Lundahl is expected to go on the disabled list for the remainder of the season but a corresponding move has not yet been made.
