Pelicans Game Notes for August 1

August 1, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WHAT HAPPENED WAS...: The Pelicans picked up their first doubleheader sweep of the season on what was unquestionably the longest night of 2009. Myrtle Beach secured a 6-2 win over Kinston in game one behind a 3-for-4 day from Cole Miles, a 2-for-3 performance including a home run and a double from Chris Shehan, and five strong innings by starter Erik Cordier. That contest included an hour and 13 minute rain delay with play suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Pelicans leading 5-2. Game two was a battle of wills, with the Pelicans and Indians dueling scoreless until the bottom of the ninth in a scheduled seven-inning game. With a man on second and two outs, the Indians elected to intentionally walk Shehan to avoid his red-hot bat and pitch to Robert Marcial. The Pelicans' veteran shortstop and leader smashed the first pitch he saw from Kinston reliever David Roberts into an empty Land Shark Landing at nearly one o'clock in the morning, ending the marathon affair and giving Myrtle Beach its first walk-off homer of the season. Three Pelicans pitchers combined to allow just three Indians hits over nine innings, striking out 12 and walking five with reliever Tommy Palica picking up the victory.

SULLIVAN: Southpaw Richard Sullivan has found tough sledding since the end of May. It was on the 27th of that month that his club last won a game in which Sullivan appeared. Richard has lost six straight starts and seven of his last eight, but his numbers are not exactly fitting those one would expect of a 2-8 pitcher. The left-hander is the owner of a 4.12 ERA and boasts a two-to-one strikeouts-to-walks ratio. Richard has fallen victim to some tough luck and low run support. The Pelicans have given the Louisville, Kentucky native an average of just 1.92 runs to work with in each of his 13 starts. Richard has seen the Indians twice this year, going a combined 12 in- nings against Kinston over his pair of starts. In those two outings, Richard is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA having allowed seven runs--six earned--on 12 hits.

PEREZ: Since joining the Indians on July 10, right-hander Alexander Perez has been mostly Jekyll with some Hyde mixed in. In his first three starts, Perez went at least six innings and gave up just three combined runs. After a July 21 start at Winston-Salem in which he took the loss despite allowing just two runs over six innings, Alexan- der was the owner of a 1-1 record and a 1.42 ERA. Last time out, however, the right-hander allowed five runs, all earned, on seven hits over just four and a third innings of work. Although opponents are batting just .275 against Alexander, their average is elevated with men on base (.302). In 15 games with the Lake County Captains of the South Atlantic League this year, Perez was 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

SHEHAN CAN: Recently-promoted outfielder Chris Shehan started his Pelicans career slowly, going 0-for-10 in his first three games in a Myrtle Beach uniform following his mid-July callup. Since then, no bat in the Myrtle Beach order has been hotter. Last night, starting in left field for both ends of the doubleheader, Shehan went a com- bined 5-for-6 with three doubles, a home run, two walks (one intentional), three runs scored and a run batted in. Coming into last night, the Strasburg, Pennsylvania native had just two multi-hit games as a Pelican. He equaled that feat in the doubleheader, posting two hits in game one and three in game two. Shehan's tear was the reason Kinston decided to intentionally walk him to pitch to Robert Marcial in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two. That decision led to Marcial's third jack of the season and the Pelicans' first walk-off homer of 2009

DOUBLE DIPPING: Last night's twinbill sweep was the Pelicans' first of 2009. Prior to last night, Myrtle Beach had played five doubleheaders, splitting four and dropping one. The Pelicans improved to 3-1 in doubleheader games at home this season, having split a pair of games with the Lynchburg Hillcats back on June 16, with one of those games played as a makeup for a contest rained out in Lynchburg on May 6.

THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: Since Michael Broadway entered the Pelicans' 14-9 loss to the Potomac Nationals on July 27 with two outs in the seventh inning, Myrtle Beach's bullpen has been nearly untouchable. Pelicans relievers have combined to toss 17 innings since that time, allowing one run (charged to Cory Gearrin as he picked up his 10th save against Potomac on July 28) on nine hits, good for a 0.53 staff ERA. The bullpen has struck out 25 bat- ters over that span against nine walks.
